Alright, and the whole 1-5 thing is what your friend told you?

and how do coaches, know, i tryed the whole video thing and talked to the coach and went to the rink to watch a practice, but the only coach who i have really talked to is andover and exeter, the st pauls coach didnt seem as interested for some reason, they dont have a big line up of goalies either.

I'm pretty sure SPS has 2-3 pretty solid goalies. Perhaps they feel they're set.

SPS is fine on goalies right now. There's a fourth former right now who is solid, and Pratt does a solid job of recruiting. Its possible he already has another goalie in mind.

I think the coaches know by your prospective athlete questionaire. If you sound good on paper, they will call your club coach to find out about you. They might even come watch a game (both happened with my son). We actually went to the school a year early so he could introduce himself to the coach. He plays his main sport for a very well known team so the coaches' interest was piqued immediately. It's good to get all that info in early in the process.

Yah, a kid on my football team was getting recruited to play BS football. They came to the championship and tried to "talk him up."

But can SPS turn their football program around? I would love to hear from SPS students what's going on in this regard?

Honestly, and apparently, I imagine they aren't overly concerned about turning their football team around. A school with only 500 students can't and won't be good at all sports.

True... except for hockey SPS sports are lacking. I watched SPS play my sister's team the other day in girls bball, and I was surprised about the quality of the team. SPS scored in the 20's and got whipped by my sister's team ( her team finished the season <.500 and didn't qualify for the playoffs.)

Actually Creative1, I was looking for an answer on SPS Football program with a little more substance.

As of Fall 2008 they have a new Football coach Craig Vandersea, who is associate director of admissions and Assistant Athletic Director. I am wondering what else seems to have transpired between the end of last season and now in regards to improving their program.

250 boys is plenty to drive a quality program if the school's trustees are behind it. I could name school examples, but it's off topic.

Sounds like we need We30 in the net, I think he could whip them all based on what I know of him.

A boy I have known since birth recently graduated from Groton. He was captain of their football team. Lost every single game, but wrote his college essay on how to motivate your team in the face of disaster. So, you can still win when you lose!

Sarum - My substance comes from conversations with admissions staff. The comment I provided you is what one of them told me regarding sports at SPS. Perhaps, Vandersea is a sign of a new commitment - I suppose we'll see in the fall who might have been recruited this admissions cycle.

Teams ebb and flow every year but historically SPS has had decent to stellar teams in boys and girls cross country, boy's soccer, squash, hockey, wrestling, tennis, crew - a few that come to mind.

SPS also has a very strong music program - amazing orchestra and a couple wonderful choruses, decent band. Some of the kids who participate in the music program are also athletic but many are not yet are desirable from an admissions perspective. So not all 250 boys at the school are going to be chosen for athletic prowess.

the problem is they cant make it to my games, there are no teams elite enough on the east coast, so we often have to fly to LA, Chicago and Detriot to face any teams worth playing. the 3 teams ahead of us in the US are LA selects, Detriot Honeybaked, and Wisconsin Fire..... we dominate all new england teams. im a very big kid and as a freshman, i would probably be just as big and played at just a high level as the juniors there, so by 2nd year, i could easily be on varsity... but when i went to meet the coach it was some new guy because the real coach decided to take a break, he emailed me, but the rest of our games are round robins across the country.

We30 - did your current coach talk to the BS coaches about you?

Ya the schools to small to be good at football in my opinion. My interviewer even kind of made fun of the team..But not all there teams are bad. Soccers pretty good and Basketball has potential, i dont know about the others. Im sure hockeys average also.

Well that's interesting, that an admissions officer made the "numbers" excuse for not having a .500+ football team (in their league) to you. I wonder how many wrestlers cross over to football at SPS? I see SPS beat some very good schools in wrestling. Schools that have PG's.
Groton, Middlesex, St. G's, I believe they all have the "numbers" issue with no PG's, and they still are able to compete in their league. I'm not an expert, but I believe there are still some very bright boys who play football.
Ok, thanks for your comments.

WE30 you do play football in the fall don't you? With your size that would be a great hook it seems at SPS.

The thing with that is, its about a 5 year turn around now. Once your bad no one wants to play for you, especially in football. If I had a 150 pund freshman blocking for me..my heads coming off. I play soccer and football here because of the different seasons..but up north there in the same season. No way in the world I play football there lol

They'll get better, it will just take awhile.

Every team/school in the SPS football league has the same issues with numbers and size of the kids. Honestly, how much damage can a 150 pound kid do to you anyway, as it figures that the defense is the same size as your blockers. SPS probably just needs a few 175 pound scat backs with speed who can shed a tackle now and again.
To get back to my original question, what is going on with the team? How good are the sophomores and juniors moving up next year? Any good freshmen come in this year (2008)? We know the coach is good.

Well a senior LB on the other team can easily be 200...if the freshman misses the block, your screwed. Very possible the team just isn't big/physical enough. Its not all just about how many people you have. Think about it from the admission officers viewpoint. They can only accept so many people..and so many athletes. I doubt a football player would even hold much weight in admissions, you can't be good in everything.

And really skill positions do you know good without a line. So even with a few good QBs or WRs..improvement wont come for awhile.

To be perfectly honest, nobody cares about football at SPS. I think we have just come to terms that football is not our thing. Once you have a couple 0-8 seasons, you start to figure it out. Some kids just quit football, cause they are sick of getting their tails handed to them every game. Quite frankly I don't blame them. Boys soccer is good, boys cross country is very very good. There's only so much you can do in one season. The positive thing is, the kids love the new coach, at least a lot more then the old coach. So I suppose there is hope. But if football is really your passion, SPS may not be the place for you.
