I know from my family's first hand experience at half a dozen NE BS (football) that Athletes show up a week to a few days earlier than the regular students (for practice). Not sure about SPS or SPS Freshmen.

Well I'm sure if anyone shows up early the freshman or any new students who think they have a chance at a varsity sport show up also. There's a little sheet SPS sent in the package about sports, I haven't read the whole thing though.

I don't think Freshman can play varsity.

Only returning varsity athletes show up early in the fall and it's only a couple of days early, not a week early, not at all like many day schools that have practice for a couple of weeks at the end of the summer. Some teams may start practice later, if the coach has a conflict. 6th formers (seniors) also show up early. New students all arrive on the same day, generally a day before most of the returning 4th and 5th formers. (I think the only exception might be a new 5th former who is definitely going to play varsity.)

Why can't freshmen play varsity?

Freshmen can play varsity sports. I don't know what Sarum is talking about.

freshmen can play Varsity but new 3rd and 4th formers don't come back early for sports

mpicz....isn't there a summer soccer league you can join to increase your chances of making varsity? Being in shape is far from all you need to make the team; what about skill? At least get some touches on the ball everyday. Lots of the kids are probably playing superY during the summer.

Here's the SPS 2009-10 calendar:

Thanks C1!
So Freshman Football & LAX players in SPS's league can play Varsity? I guess I am a neophyte when it comes to this league.

How on earth could you field the best team if you couldn't field the best players (some of whom may very well be freshman)?

Freshman can most definitely play Varsity on any and all SPS teams.

In response to D2G's question about grades. The way it works is that an HH is a 90 or above, H is 80 to 90, HP 70 to 80, P 60 to 70. In full year classes, students get a grade (H, HP, etc. but no number grade) each trimester, plus a grade for the final (or, in some subjects, a portfolio, including final, midterm, final lab, etc.) There are also "inside" grades and comments from your teachers in the middle of each term to let you know how you are doing. The student's overall number average for those 4 marks is basically what goes on the transcript as the grade for that course. Term-long courses and arts courses don't have finals.
In the SPS grading system, there are no plusses or minuses. I have heard students talk about this a few times, and some find it kind of "random," that some small differences in performance over a school year lead to a big difference in grade (79 vs 80, means HP or H) while a fairly big difference (80 or 89, for example) in performance leads to no difference in the grade. On the other hand, I think the grading system somehow leads to a little less thinking about grades all the time than at some other schools. All the grades are used, though of course not all teachers grade the same way.

not tryin to be cocky, but i think i hav a shot at making JV soccer, cuz so many seniors left the Varsity team.....i signed up for tryouts, when are those gonna take place?

and what are they like?

You might try emailing the Boy's JV Coach: Sr. Jorge Pardo (pardo@sps.edu) and ask him. Try to be a bit modest.

You might also want to visit this SPS Boys Soccer if you have not already.

Tryouts are in the beginning of the school year...

AWESOME
i'm so pumped, i'm gonna pump iron w/ my legs all summer.
the coach sent me a letter about the program, it had a nice painting on the front. lol

Keyleyme ...I won't be in the country for a lot of my summer. I know I can make varsity if I'm in soccer shape. But when the season starts 2 days after schools starts there's not much chance. Ill just talk to coach torney, it'd suck to play JV after being an ODP player lol.

You wouldn't be the only ODP player to be playing JV at SPS or any prep school. ;)

Well if they have ODP players on JV, they should be killing the competition and winning state every year.
