Why are cell phones banned? Has anyone started reading The Odyssey yet? I've ordered it off of Amazon.com. Its so much cheaper than Barnes and Noble. I am so cheap!:)

We got "The Odyssey" a few months back, but it wasn't the Fagle translation. So we bought that translation Tuesday. He's already got a head start on it, but he has quite a bit to go.

I'm starting tomorrow when my books arrive. I got the SparkNotes and CliffsNotes for it too. They really help, but just reading them by themselves is highly unrecommended, but they are very helpful when studying a book. I look forward to reading, my mom said she really enjoyed it when she was in prep school.

Important Question:How can SPS students get back and forth from Manchester Airport when going and coming back from school and home?

Esa: The Odyssey is a bit tough to read on your own and I doubt you'll get anything out of it that way. Do yourself a favour and read around the program of great books you'll encounter in the humanities sequences at SPS. I've suggested Denby 'Great Books' which is a Columbia grad's retrospective of the Westen Civ sequence but reflects how a cultured person thinks about the books. (Denby is a film critic which is an interesting way to contextualize books--a relatively recent film, O Brother where art thou? which is set in the American South, is directly based on the Odyssey and although you might not see that immediately, trying to link it to the Odyssey will do much more for you than SparksNotes and will be a great deal more fun for both you and your mother)

I don't know why you would want to fly in and out of Manchester to get to St. Paul's from NC. Concord trailways has direct service to St. Paul's/Concord at beginning/end of terms from Logan airport. This is by far the easiest way to get there. Essentially the drill is to pick up the Concord bus at Logan which will go to Boston South Station and from there straight to Concord. In Concord you take a $5 cab ride to St. Paul's. There is no need for your mom to worry about this. You won't get lost--Concord Trailways have done this before-- thousands of times. Going back at end of term the bus starts at St. Paul's and takes you straight to Logan. Don't worry, have a good summer!

For me, its much cheaper to fly into Manchester than Boston, and it seems like there would be some kind of service from Manchester to St. Paul's since its the closest commercial airport.

Actually there is service from manchester airport. The school's Logan bus will drop off/pick up at Manchester Airport at end of term/vacations. If that doesn't work for you you can take a Concord trailways bus from downtown Manchester to Concord. That will add cabfare at either end but it doesn't seem a big problem. Cheers

Does anyone know when we'll receive our class schedules? Is that coming in the mail or will it be on Parents Online in the beginning to August?

Good question. How are your parents setting up your funds (if you don't mind me asking)? Are they going to set up a separate bookstore account with Follett or just put everything on the SPS account? We opted to set up a Follett account.

I have no idea, I geuss which ever way is cheapest.

Does anybody have the list of school supplies we need, I think I lost my list?

If you look back a page to post #75, I listed school supplies that we bought for him to attend Access Exeter. Well, we took him there over the weekend and I can say that he was pretty prepared in terms of his supplies. BTW Exeter is even more beautiful when the snow melts!!

Some of the extra things we had to buy since then include a usb flash drive, multicolor highlighters (helpful in colorcoding his schedule), shower flipflops, holepuncher, waterproof/resistant watch, and a few other little things.

Although I did buy sheet sets and a comforter, he did not bring his own pillows. The pillows they provide are kinds weird -- semi plastic and rough. So I would definitely bring my own. Also a waterproof mattress pad. The mattress they have on the bed is similar to the pillows --weird semi plastic. A mattress pad would provide extra comfort.

Hey, if anything you can always email me or im me. Our son is having an awesome time at Exeter's summer program and looks forward to continuing at SPS in the fall.

just a nudge

Happened to be in NH the other day and couldn't resist stopping by and taking a look in the summer. What a beautiful place.

So how does anybody know specifically how transportation from the airports to SPS works?

Got the letter today for E&R Laundry Service. (A bit pricey :( ) However we're thinking about using the service for our son. Has anyone used them before? How easy/difficult is it to get laundry done on campus?

Cannot answer about St Pauls but I went to another school and we used E&R and it was useful and reliable......with all of the usual insitiutional problems....the boys loved getting the tiny tank tops and undies back with our stuff it made for great entertainment.

So how often do you get to go off campus?

Laundry on campus is easy, at least when I studied there over the summer it was. There is a laundry room in the basement of the dorm in which there are two washers and two dryers, I can't remember the exact price right now, but $10 in quarters lasted me the whole summer doing laundry once a week. I did my laundry on Sunday morning, which meant there was no one else who wanted to be doing it.

So are you equating dress shirts to laundry which in my lingo would be sox and jeans. Don't you need to consider dress shirts???

As a girl I washed skirts and blouses; I own very little dry clean only stuff. My laundry was easy to do, as always personal experience will vary. My mom was appalled to find out that all my laundry went into the machine together, whites, colors, and towels because I had no desire to spend more than absolutely necessary on my laundry. I will share, however, that a male friend of mine went the entire summer without doing one load of laundry, like I said experience will vary.
