To Fellow Members of the Long Gray Line,

I just finished a project involving the study of West Point but also the study of businesses, government, and non-profit organizations. The subject of this study was leadership.

I began this project while completing my doctorate in business down at Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, during my tenure at Tech, Enron broke. Along with Global Crossing, WorldCom, Adelphia, Qwest, Boeing, NASA, Jack Abramoff, and Abu Ghraib to name just a few. Frankly, I think our nation, our society is at a leadership crossroads. West Point can help make sure we all choose the right path.

The efforts of my research materialized in a just-released book, Stand Your Ground: Building Honorable Leaders the West Point Way. This leadership book, so far, has gained steam across a variety of settings and industries. For instance, former 2-time U.S. Attorney General (Presidents Reagan and Bush) and Governor of Pennsylvania, Dick Thornburgh, endorsed the book. Also, 1999 NCAA Division I Football Coach of the Year, Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, endorsed the book. In addition, the President of Slippery Rock University, the CEO of Century furniture, and professors at a variety of places to include Carnegie Mellon back the book. Very humbly, General Allen, the Commandant of Cadets at Virginia Tech, chose Stand Your Ground as one of the core and mandatory leadership books for all junior cadets. Now, I want your endorsement too.

For those of the Long Gray Line remaining in the military (many of whom I interviewed for this book), the notion of honorable leadership seems to come more readily and naturally because they are around other West Point graduates, Army officers, and the world’s best soldiers who constantly remind and reinforce this notion of honorable leadership. More than ever, we need to extrapolate, or advance the principle of honorable leadership beyond West Point and the Armed Services into the broader context of business, government, and society. I need your help to do just that. Please begin to spread this message.

I ask that you read and think about Stand Your Ground. And if you enjoy it and buy the message, I ask that you spread the word. One of the greatest achievements that an academic can make is for his or her research and writings to affect practice and policy. I hope Stand Your Ground can deliver that type of impact.
