Standardized tests and Candian schools

I have taken the SAT and a SAT subject test and was wondering if these things will be looked at for admissions if I apply to a few Canadian universities, like University of Calagary.

If you are an applicant from the U.S. and the schools you’re interested in require the SAT, then, yes, the scores will be looked at. As far as I know, all Canadian universities will require the SAT for American applicants. You can find this information easily enough on their websites.

Would someone be considered an American applicant if they did 9th and 10th in US and the rest of highschool in Canada?

Are you currently enrolled in a Canadian high school? Are you a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, in Canada on a visa?

Some of the smaller Canadian universities (Mount Allison, St Francis Xavier, Bishop’s) are SAT-optional for US applicants. I am not sure whether they require SATs for merit based financial aid. Acadia says that they won’t look at SATs even if you send your scores. However, yes most Canadian universities, including all of big ones that I am aware of, require the SAT for applicants from the US. In this case “applicants from the US” includes students who went to high school in the US but also have dual (US and Canadian) citizenship.

However, if you did grades 11 and 12 in Canada, then you will need to ask the universities. My guess is that they would consider you to be an applicant from Canada.

One nit on my post: Where I said “SAT” I probably should have said “SAT or ACT”.

If you’re under an American curriculum, then yes, they will look at SAT scores (regardless of your citizenship). Many will state minimum scores (e.g. 600 on math and 600 on EBRW).

I know some look at/require SAT Subject Tests (SAT II’s). Some universities, such as UBC and Queen’s, ignore SAT II’s. Thus, if you bombed on those, then it would be a good idea to apply to those.

Note that many will allow you to use AP exam scores in lieu to SAT II scores. However, unless they’re required, I don’t think AP exam scores are considered except that they can grant credits.

A few universities don’t require SAT scores. I don’t think UVic requires them anymore.

Thank you everybody for your input.

Alwaysamom, I will probably be attending a Canadian Highschool next year but have not yet.
