Hi! If I’m applying to schools whose stated range for the ACT is 31-35 or 32-35 and my score is a 30, should I take it again? I’m not sure that I would do better a second time so I only want to take it if it’s necessary or would have an actual chance of improving my admissions. Thanks!
Is the range the 25th - 75th percentile? If yes, then you are below the 25th percentile, so I would try to take it again. Test scores however are only part of your application, so if the rest of your application is competitive, the ACT score may not impact your chances significantly. Much depends upon which schools, acceptance rates, intended major etc…
It depends on the competitiveness of the school, you may want to be above admission average to have a decent chance. But for any school, below the 25th percentile is not a good sign for a unhooked applicant. Most of those admitted with below mid50 state are athlete recruits, legacy, unconventional majors, first generation students, minority, or with other hooks.
Also consider the SAT. Some students do better on one versus the other.
