jna,
Well it seems despite my best attempts to both describe what I considered unique, while clarifying that this did not make me * superior*, it has turned into a shouting match.

If you knew anything about the area around Stanford you would understand that the 101 highway serves as a racial and socioeconomic barrier. There are Palo Alto, Atherton, Menlo on the west... while the east side contains East Menlo and East Palo Alto, although East Menlo has yet to be institutionally segregated from Menlo Park the way EPA and PA are.

I will agree that Hunter's point is a less than nice place (I've seen the film strait outta hunter's point), but I would consider anyplace where there is gang activity to the point where territorial signs are spray painted on the fence of your house (which indeed happened to me) then that constitutes a less than safe neighborhood.
Again, let me reiterate that I am not normatively better than you or anyone else for this, but it is something I consider a unique experience that also relates specifically to Stanford more than a school someplace else.

edit: Skiingfool, I'm afraid I can't say I'm a local. I spent a gap year in the area, and currently go to school in Evanston Illinois. Sometimes I wish I had stayed and attended Foothill CC to compete for the few spots they save for students from there.
