Stanford 2008 Transfer

Regarding the supplemental questions:

I figure they're a way to get to know the "real you." I gave a glib answer or two, a couple "weighty" ones, and the rest I just answered straightforwardly.

They might also have been a way to set the tone for the supplemental essays: getcha loose.

Bad news about Harvard, eh? Sorry to anyone who had their application in there. I just keep on hopin' Stanford adjusted following last year, and we'll be oughta the bottle neck.

PS: Does anyone know if they release Freshman class data prior to our admit date? It might be interesting to take a look at.

I second you on that one KGZotU. I hope the admissions committee doesn't underestimate their yield again, for our sakes at least. Damn, Stanford's PR people are doing their jobs too well. The school's popularity among applicants has really shot up in recent years, and the rate of matriculation keeps creeping up. But then, if Stanford didn't seem that attractive, many of us wouldn't apply in the first place. It always cuts both ways with these things.

On your question of Freshman class data, if you look at last year's Stanford transfer thread, people were mentioning a higher-than-expected Freshman conversion before the release of the transfer decisions. I don't know the source of that info, that is, if Stanford had yet formally released any data at that time.

Hey all,

I was reading this site and I am now curious what my chances are of getting into Stanford. I am currently finishing up my freshman year at a j.c. I am hoping to apply as a history major. I have a 3.8 g.p.a. and plan on taking Calc and Stats. My Sat and Act scores weren't phenominal but I plan on taking them again because when I took them I had only completed geometry in high school, but I am now almost done with pre-calc, so any chances at all. I also work part time for a construction company in the summer, but my high school grades were terrible because I basically didn't go.

hoping to apply? meaning you haven't applied yet?

Maybe he's applying next year...?

Eric,

Supposing you're applying next year--the application period is closed for the 2008-2009 school year--I'd say you have an appreciable but small chance. A 3.8 is sufficient for consideration, but it won't carry the application IMHO. To get in you'll need some combination of outstanding life/work experience, a challenging course load, great recommendations, etc. You don't have to be a paragon of anything, but I think you do need something to help you stand out.

Of course, it's still not too late to really excel in some of your classes and catch the attention of your teachers, if you haven't already.

3.9 GPA at HCC. (Houston)
Mentor at Local Elementary/Middles during the year.
During the Summer, I work at a Foster home.
1400 on the Old SAT.
4 years of basketball in HS.
Mayor's Youth Commission
Rank 40/328ish in HS.

I plan on applying next year (Fall of 2009.) It is unlikely I will be admitted, but what do I have to lose? A couple bucks? It is worth it to me. Good luck to everyone applying this year, I wish you all the best.

hey im trying to transfer as a junior from princeton, any thoughts if that would hurt/ help?

I have pretty standard scores/ gpa
hs - 4.4 and 2250
college - 3.75

good ecs and recs

KGZotU,

Thanks for your respone. To clear up confusion, I am applying next year haha. Sorry just one last question. Would it improve my odds favorably if I took a year of a foreign language, starting in the fall, and science courses along with taking five or more classes ?

@Eric: Supposing you keep up the GPA and can get good recs, it would help. Stanford likes to see a broad set of lower division coursework.

@asdf: Decent chances, depends on your ECs and recs. Concensus is that transfering from a big university could either help or hurt. Basically, you've already proven yourself to be a good student, but you have a tougher case to make that transfering out is really such a great deal.

@Bourne: I wouldn't say hopeless, sounds like you've got a shot. If you can impress your teachers, get good recs, and write good essays then I think you could certainly hold onto some hope. (;

I've been checking my application status online every few days, and today it told me they've got received all of my credentials! I'm a little excited...only a litle. (;

Good luck to everyone out there.

KGZotU: How do you check app status online?! I didn't know you could do that with commonapp...

You can check it through Stanford's computer system, "Axess." The link is on the left hand side of the page.

https://axess.stanford.edu/

It basically tells you which of your documents they've processed, although they haven't yet processed everything yet.

Wait. How did you sign up for Axess, KGZotU? I don't have a sunet id or password. :S

You don't have to sign up. (;

I'm a little freaked out that I never received this email now. :(

yeah, i didn't get one of those either. bad news.

well I called a few days ago and they said that within the next week we'd be getting a confirmation email regarding the status of our file (if its complete or not), giving applicants a chance to send in the missing stuff.

I'm assuming we'll get that one.

Let me clear this up.

The above is NOT an e-mail. It's copied from a web-page that you can visit. (;

If you go to the Stanford Axess site, there's a link on the left hand side that says "Check Application Status". If you enter your e-mail address, they'll automatically e-mail you the status of your application. It won't say anything about acceptance, though, just "We've processed the following documents," and, "We haven't yet processed the following documents." The e-mail generally takes about an hour to arrive.

Hope this helps. (;
