Hi,
I just hoped that some of the present Stanford students or EA admits could let us know how many B's they received in high school. I realize there are probably TONS of you with no B's at all, but for those of you who did get a couple...how many?

don't worry, i know when I was in your shoes I was like, "oh no another a-/b+...that one will DEFINITELY throw stanford out of the running"...turned out that there isn't a set number of b+'s which will automatically disqualify you from consideration :D

be passionate about the things you love, do well on standardized testing, and you'll balance out.

yeah lol i started to get a little nervous bc at my school the grading curves are so tough people like get down on their knees for B+ and i have like, four over highschool and everyone here seems to have none but my gc told me that most uiversities know which schools grade tougher, mine being one of them. so if you go to one of those schools, dont fear!

yeah...if you write a thoughtful essay, do well on standardized tests, and your teachers say you're a mature/intelligent person, they're likely to look the other way. it isn't like, "whoops, 4 B+s, too bad for him" trash folder

anyways, B+ are good. right? at least at my school theyre referred to as 'honors grades'. i never knew there was such a stigma around B+ until I came to this website.

Are you guys counting freshman year grades too? I hear that Stanford doesn't look at those. Do they look closely at whether its a B- or a B+? Gah, it's starting to feel completely hopeless for me. Would an excellent score on the new SATI balance out my abysmal GPA (3.7)?

Yeah...B+'s ARE good grades. I worked my tail off for the 4 B+'s that I received :)

But you start to get a bit paranoid after hanging around here too much....all these incredible applicants make me nervous that I don't measure up....:)

Thanks Firebird.....but this was supposed to be for encouragement for those of us who haven't received straight A's!! :)

As I said, I am sure there are tons of applicants/acceptees that get all A's. I would think that going to a small ,extremely tough, private school must count for something in the presence of a couple B+'s.?

Grades entirely depend on the schools. My high school is a competitive prep school and usually only an average of 3 kids per class get above a 92 overall average. At the public high school in town, practically everyone has a 4.0.

I'd have to agree with Juice...I go to a public high school (3,200 kids), and the top two percent is usually above a 4.3 gpa (Honors/AP give 5 pt, Reg give 4). There are a lot of above 4.0 overall because if you take one honors but the rest are regular and easy, then you'll be sure to get over 4.0.

Right, the GPA says more. At my school, none of the top 5 kids got straight A's either term this year...they're taking a lot of AP's...that's why they are weighted...if you are #1 and you have 3 A's and 3 B+'s and the B+'s are AP's, you have nothing to apologize for...think about yourself as an adcom: you see the grades, a flag goes up, you look at the class rank and/or the hs's policy, and it is understood. Just do your best and hope. Nobody said life was fair. (although I think anyone who tried this hard through 13 years of school kinda believed it was...that was a lot of effort to put into this big crap shoot...if I knew it was this ridiculous, I would have taken easier courses, partied more, etc. I tell my siblings to kick back cuz the payoff is so unlikely. Call me morbid, but I don't think I could even be that happy if I got into any of these schools anymore, cuz I see it as so random...I'd feel like I won a coin toss, not like I had been rewarded for my big efforts.)

umm....harsh words there? perhaps we could be a bit mopre encouraging to the poor underclassmen who visit this site. I definitely feel as if my hard work has paid off...not like I won a big crapshoot. Is it a crapshoot? Yes. But you have to work REALLY hard to get into it. And if you have good enough EC's and Grades and scores, you'll probably get into at least one of your top choices.
Anyways, to answer this thread. No, there's not "too many" B's. It all depends on your school. For example, at my school, (semi-rural public school that doesn't get too many people into top schools) even 1 B might be enough to do you in...even if you are taking 6 AP's. But I'm sure if you went to Gtown Prep or something, a B+ would be seen as great.

1 B+. Don't worry though - B+ is ok, as long as class rank is high.

Also, crucha22 - i used to think that man, but now that i got in, i don't feel that way. i don't think i deserved it per se but it feels nice :)

I've heard that Stanford recalculates GPA on their own scale (a 4.0 scale). They say that they don't count freshman year. Do they count senior year, though (mid-year reports)? Also, my high school offers A+'s. Does Stanford count an A+ as a 4.0, or 4.33?
