Stanford Chances for a legacy

I know this isnt the best place to post this but I wanted many opinions...I have an interesting case so it might be fun to go through (or not, I dont know!)

Stanford Chances...

Hi! I am a male asian junior right now from Michigan. I have a 3.76 gpa now. I have had an interesting set of courses. Freshman year: Honors Precalculus, AP Physics B, Honors Spanish, and all regular classes not including spanish which i keep moving on up in levels ( i just started at spanish 200 instead of the normal 100)
Sophomore year: AP Calculus AB with a 5 on the exam, AP Chem one semester but next semester took Honors Chem because it was too hard, spanish 300 then all reg. classes
Junior Year: AP Statistics, AP US Government, AP Economics, spanish 400, then all reg.
Senior Year: Strong classes

Test Scores: I am taking the new sat and am currently around 2300.
EC:

I am in a club called Building with Books, a charity association devoted to raising money to build a school in a developing nation. I am very involved in this club. I do about 12 hours of community service every month thru this club by teaching in an elementary school for underpriveliged kids who are below their normal grade expectations and have no real hope of catching up. I help the kids learn how to do their hw because their parents are also uneducated and cant help them out. Our building with books club is the only one in michigan that can afford to do this so we are the children's last hope. I also went to this small community that has had a bad voter turnout rate for the past few elections thru BWB and helped set up voter stands and raise voter turnout for like 8 hours one day. I helped sell season packets for the Detroit Lions through the club for community service and to help raise money. (we got part of the amount we sold). I also participated in a classroom exchange to witness how school functions in underprivileged school districts that don't have enough money to pay the teachers properly. I have done many other projects besides this. My biggest service project is gonna occur this summer. Im going to be going to Mali (fully paid by club) as a representative of my club and helping to build the school which we raise money for throughout the year. It will last 17 days and be around 200 hours of comm. serv. This is by far my main EC and something I want to pursue at college.

This summer i gave tennis lessons to little kids.
I am also on the varsity team for tennis this year but last two years on the jv team

I have been playing piano for 10 years. I practice 14 hours a week.

I had also been out of 2000 nominated to join the US Physics Olympiad team, which test i took in my freshman year but did not get in (to the team).

I want to major in business and engineering.

Recs should be no problem.

I also took summer school in the summer before my sophomore year at an advanced program for "academic scholors" at University of Michigan and a summer school program in the summer before my freshman year at Northwestern. I took a number theory class at U of M and a precalculus class at Northwestern that helped me prepare for precalc honors freshman year.

I am also in the process of starting an FBLA chapter in my school with a friend, which is going to be really cool!

Based on these circumstances, what do u rate my chances of getting into Stanford EA? BTW I have a legacy at Stanford. My dad knows the head of a deparment with whom he is very good friends with. Im not sure if this will help. We also know the CEO of a very prominent company in the area around Stanford (not to be named) which donated 10 million to Stanford, not sure if this will help.

Thanks for reading all this stuff! What are my chances, anyone?

Sorry I did not have the time to read through all, but - regarding your question: what is your legacy status?

Well, legacy means your parents or grandparents went to stanford, not that your parent knows a head of a department. But actually i think this will help you much more than a legacy!!

Anyways, even without the above I think you have solid chances. I suggest you try to bring up your GPA to 3.8 or above.

I was confirming with my dad. Im not a legacy because he just did his post doctorate there (actually two of em, and he was named stanford's top student of the year! He got a full scholorship there when he applied from India!) But my dad knows quite a few people there, including some retired professors that held honorable posistions. He (and I!) are in love with stanford.

I had thought that I had no chance applying to Stanford because I thought my gpa was too low! What makes you say that I have decent chances? Hard classes? Or Ec's? I wasnt even planning on applying next year

i dont know your chances (or anyone else's), but good luck! as a fellow michigander, ill be competing with you for stanford next year. or maybe not, since i dont plan on applying scea.

anyone else plz?

why i think you have decent chances?

very good projected sat score 2300 / 2400

very unique EC

starting a club (adcoms love this) in this case a nationally recognized club --> FBLA

US Physics Olympiad (even though you didn't make the final cut)

your connections at stanford

I don't think you should have put being nominated for Physics Olympiad. At our school, you can sign up to take it if you want. Unless you meant you were one of the 200 semifinalists.

I was "nominated for my outstanding results" in the olympiad. I got a letter of recognition in the mail. It said I didnt make the final cut but I got a commendable score.

anyone else?

I'd say you have a decent shot at Stanford, definitely worth trying for. Stanford does not just look at grades. They look at how hard your classes are, test scores, EC's, essays. They are looking for students with a "passion for learning," as they told us. That will be more important that your gpa.

I wish you the best. I think Stanford is a great school. Of course, the fact that I graduated from it and so will my son may have something to do with that! :-)

Susantm, what did you major in and what is your son majoring in? If engineering, how was the experience? That is what I am planning on majoring in!
