My student got lifted from the waitlist and we actually got a call from the admission office saying one of the admission officers advocated saying “we should get this kid in” when they discussed whom they were going to lift from the waitlist. We never found out what’s the reasons this officer saw in the application. But yea the admission officer would fight for you if they see something special in the app.

Rejection is just redirection. There’s something to be said for being at or near the top of your peers and you will do great wherever you go!
