Stanford Institutes of Medical Research (SIMR) 2008

yeah dude they didn't really explain that extra departments business.

i just PRAY that is the case.

hey what did you guys put for your 'preferences'?

I'm thinking many of us put down neuroscience/stem cell research for our favorites.

ahaha my order was

neuroscience
cancer biology
stem cell
immunology
cardiovascular

&I'LL BE SO HAPPY IF THEY HAVE EXTRA SLOTS. gfhdsgfhsghfsa

yeahhh

i wonder if anyone on CC has gone here before?

haha my friend and i put cardiovascular last as well. it just seems sorta... boring!

My S went. This is a work program, not a summer fun camp. No entertainment activities, and not much interaction among the hs interns, with the exception of the am lectures. How hard you work will depend on your lab. My S generally got there before 8 and left after 6, with a lunch break on-site. Some nights he stayed later. The mornings when he had lectures at 9 were the mornings that he got to "sleep in." He didn't have to work weekends at all, but again, that would depend on your lab, I guess. He also got off for July 4. He gained tons of experience and absolutely loved it, even though it was a seriously tough summer. The families are invited to the final poster presentation, and the kids did some amazing work.

did he get a recommendation from his mentor, or make any relationships with the professionals?

now that i read it, it doesn't seem as fun as i'd imagined.
oh well, i still want to go!

that description makes me want to go more AHHHHHHHHHHHH. freaking sounds really exciting. :/ gdi fhsgfhdsghfagh :(

decisions come out tomorrow. this is really kind of nerve wracking.. :/

Could one of you post a link to this progam? I found this but it doesn't look like it's for HS students.

well it's april 8th...
and nothing has happened.

when will the results come out?!

Why Is The List Not Up Yet?

i think they email the potential participants first. i got an email of acceptance today in the afternoon

^^^:True My D got email of acceptance this afternoon and the list is up now too.
35 out of more than 400 applications, so congrats to all those got in.

hey everyone, i'm pretty sure i'm doing this program and am extremely excited. my question is: what's everyone doing about housing?

Most of the participants are from the peninsula or South Bay. Almost everyone commutes by car, although there is some public transportation. If you are East Bay, it's more complicated to use public transport, but it can be done.

If you are over 18, you may be able to get campus housing, but it's not cheap, and of course, your stipend won't cover it. If you need campus housing, and you are over 18, go through the coordinator to navigate the system once you return your paperwork.

Thanks for the info. I'm East Bay. Pretty long commute, but I'll figure something out.
Out of curiosity, how much is the stipend?

It's in the application:

last paragraph $1500 plus parking sticker

Why don't you try carpooling? There are a couple of east bay high schools listed.

Public transit options are transbay bus or bart to caltrain. You can check that out online.

I'll PM you if you want details.

hey you guys. i am applying for this research program this year.. Any advice or tips on how to get in?? What exactly do they want to see in your application?
how was the program other than that? i am really interested..
