@prezbucky good advice, I’m thinking more realistically of undergraduate at Olin/wpi (both research oriented and have innovative engineering education) and graduate at Stanford/mit if I don’t get in now and am still set on those schools in two years
That’s smart – taking the long-term view. Well done.
The only real problem in your whole application is your AP test scores. The rest is amazing. You have better ECs then me, you show leadership, anyone who saw your application would know what your major would be. Try some volunteering, and mention in your essay about maybe why you did bad in the AP’s.
@HarvardDream101 are ap scores looked at that much in college acceptance? Would it be better to not report them, do you think?
I’m currently in another 5 AP classes (6 if you count Gov & Eco as two), should I just report those on commapp and ignore the tests with bad scores?
ahahah it’s kinda strange how similar we are… but then again, how different can female asians be?? But anyway, I think for MIT that’ll be your hardest school, but either way, the atmosphere there is SUPER DUPER competitive (people sabotage other’s codes!!! O.o) and you don’t seem like that. As for Stanford, it’s Stanford. They’re so unpredictable it’s impossible to tell. I honestly can’t say anything. I think out of the three, though, your best bet will be Columbia. Although I don’t know that much about Columbia, I think you’ll fit in well there, and you being a female for comp sci will definitely help your case. Good luck!!
@musicpen Good luck to you too! I’ve heard about the whole high suicide rate craziness at MIT but hey, it’s MIT.
@mvalen: A few things:
Do not believe that all the schools will discount the writing score. Columbia looks at the composite, and includes the writing score in that. This is what they said AT COLUMBIA. What they do not look at is the components that helped you get that score. So on that note you are good.
You should understand that the rate of deaths at MIT are attributable to issues not fully understood to be courseload related, and not all of the reported deaths (though there was a spate of them in 2014) were of undergraduates, or even all of them students.
Further, the faculty and administration at MIT has taken a truly responsive, inclusive and integrative route, involving the whole of the MIT community of parents and students, counseling, medical and professional therapeutic staff to help it stay attuned to, treat and support students who may find themselves slipping into behaviors that will undermine their ability to make healthy personal decisions.
Good luck to you.
@Waiting2exhale Thanks, I’ll need lots of luck to be accepted for MIT. They’re coursework is known to be extremely rigorous- understandable for an institution of their calliber- and I think that’s what led to their bad reputation. It all depends on the individual, however. Personally, I find that I handle stress with relative ease, but perhaps that is what all students applying to MIT think.
your stats are good but nothing jumps out at me for you ecs, being female helps but being asian doesn’t. I think applying ed to cmu would have increased your chances. excellent essays may be able to save you for cornell or cmu
I’m a white girl and I think we have the same chances for MIT just cause there are so many Asians.
I think your only downfall is the writing scores. Colleges like the other scores more, but do want well rounded people
Ocook…should you be saying that? Seems rude.
How much did your robot cost last year? My school does vex for a reason (even though we are private), but ours was like at least one thousand last year. Probs more.
Also wish my school had enough people for clubs.
Physics 1 was insane. Like 5% got fives. I took 1 and 2 after an honors course that was like 1.5 (so lots of extra sessions for 2) and got a 4 on this first one and a 5 on the one I was less familiar with. Screw that circuit question on 1.
I wasn’t meaning to be rude, just saying that her ethnicity won’t help her at MIT. Other places yes, but it’s just a fact at MIT. Sorry if I was offensive.
Hey! I would say that you’re a very competitive candidate. I would just make sure that your essays are solid-. It seems from your test scores that writing isn’t your strongest subject, so I would make sure that you have people looking over your essays! Best of luck- really great stats! Would you consider suggesting safeties for me?

Also, like other people mentioned, MIT & Columbia are obviously really competitive but Vanderbilt is a little less so. I think you have a definite shot at Vandy!
@ocook179 nah, it’s the truth with the whole affirmative action thing. For FRC, we had like a 30k budget. I’m not sure how much everything cost, but knowing that just a power distribution board is $200, and we had motors, new batteries, and a dart, the whole thing was def over 1k. I’d say… maybe like 6k?
Anybody know if the 27% of girl applicants accepted to MIT true?
In my world anybody who is a credible candidate for MIT should be able to answer that question as easily as posting it. The answer is no. Two clicks will get you the real number.
Sorry, @mvalen- you got me on a snarky day.
