Stanford, MIT or CMU for CS

Having a choice for Stanford, MIT or CMU
which one would you choose for CS?

Being this is the Stanford board, Stanford. But another reason is that you're better positioned there if you have a vocational change of heart.

and if you don't have a vocational change of heart, you're better positioned geographically;)

I am sorry I did not tell. I am a parent and my son has these choices. I think it's insane, but somehow he thinks CMU is the best for CS.
I am trying to see may be I am missing something.

Thank you

Well they are all very highly though of. If you are extremely sure you want to do CS though, I'd pick CMU. It is, in my opinion, the premier school for pure CS.

EDIT: That is not insane at all. I'm going to MIT next year and I still think CMU is a better CS school. I think the rankings agree with your son also.

CMU is best for User Experience in CS. Also I believe media.

I think overall CMU MIT and Stanford are tied... but the name Carnegie Mellon is practically linked to CS.

Thank you for your replies.
I agree that CMU is really good in CS, but what if he changes his mind?
I just think that MIT and Stanford can give a broader education then CMU.

KirbusPrime,
what major you planning?

in CMU students MUST do a minor. they get a board education in my opinion

"I agree that CMU is really good in CS, but what if he changes his mind?"

Well if his interests happen to align with CMU's other talented departments (such as business), then he will be fine. However, this is why I chose MIT. I am a math/science/computer oriented person, and I'm not exactly sure what I want to major in. Right now I'm planning on doing Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I felt, as a whole, MIT was more prestigous and would better accomodate a change of mind. If your son, unlike me, knows that CS is what he wants, then CMU is a great place. Many big-time companies go there to recruit and your son will recieve a fine education.

by CMU i mean SCS sry

I would choose MIT, then Stanford, then CMU. CS is the only top major at CMU.

I am currently a student at cmu trying to transfer into stanford. Though cmu is great at cs the other schools have it beat in virtually all other departments, there is a lot to be said for having a school where students in all fields are doing the best work. I would go Stanford, MIT, CMU.

_42 thank you for your input and good luck with your transfer.

Go to MIT - better reputation than CMU but likely just as strong in CS and other areas. With your interests, MIT is like Stanford and CMU rolled into one...I'd say it's definitley a wise choice.

Between these school you really cannot say any one is better know for cs or has a better name, they are all the elite of the elite. I would say it is impossible to tell a difference in quaility of courses as a grad student much less as an undergrad. I suggust you forget about the cs courses and look at campus life, surrounding area, career oppertunities, quality of related and unrelated disaplines, etc.

If money is not a concern, then I think your son should consider between Stanford and MIT. I agree with _42, in that all three schools are equally good at CS, so other factors should be considered. These so-called "other factors," are likely to be superior at Stanford or MIT than at CMU.
