I was stoked to be accepted into both Yale and Carnegie Mellon SCS! Because I am most likely going to major in Comp Sci, my parents are leaning CMU because of its awesome CS ranking. Of course, I’m still a little torn because it’s Y A L E. And there are of course prestige and benefits that come with going to a school like Yale. I really have no clue. Can someone give me some insight as to where they would go if they were in my shoes? Also note that I’m getting zero aid, so both schools are relatively equal in price.
One thing I’m nervous about is that I’m not sure if Yale is top CS. They are 20th in the rankings and I heard they have like 20 faculty… and I should correct myself. I will major in CS.
Most students change direction in college as they explore alternatives and refine their interests and passions. There is no degree in the US that provides more flexibility to pursue your eventual interests than a Yale degree (with HSP being roughly equivalent). Even if you do pursue a CS major, the exposure to a broader and more sophisticated intellectual environment will help you in the longer term as technical skills become less important and understanding trends and context become more important.
Yale has been investing in their CS offering and have recently spent millions.
Have you visited? CMU is high stress and not a place where students study on the lawn on a beautiful day. Yale is quite the opposite of that. Please visit both schools.
I agree that if you’re 110% committed to CS, then go to CMU.
Personally, I’d go to Yale. Nobody’s going to toss your resume into the trashcan because you “only” have a CS degree from Yale. Plus, Yale’s campus is one of my favorites, and I’ve liked everyone I’ve met who’s gone to Yale.
