Hi,
I just got into Stanford OHS and was wondering how hard academics are at this school. I understand it will obviously be tough being a top school, but my question is more about how hard it is to get a 4.0 GPA. I really want to go to Stanford or any of the HYPMS, but I am worried that, from what I’ve heard, few people getting A’s. I am generally a top student in my class, but every kid at this school has a similar background. If anyone has some insight even unrelated to this question about OHS then please reply. Also, how hard is it to get in? I have heard anywhere from 30% to 99%, which seems a bit quirky.
Thanks
How does that school do in terms of students being accepted to HYPMS and other top schools. colleges interpret grades in light of what they know about your school.
My son just finished his junior year and his first year at Stanford Ohs. He had been homeschooled up to that point. He is extremely bright and school has always come easy for him .He took five mostly math related classes two years ago and qualified for all five with 5’s and 4’s. Won the AP scholar of distinction, etc. I say all that to say this, the first semester was a period of adjustment to the socratic style of teaching by teachers that either had masters or PHD’s and the level of difficulty of each class was challenging for him. He adjusted to it and the second semester finished with 4 A-, 1A. The course work is rigorous and the homework plentiful. You will be challenged whatever your degree of intelligence, but you will come away from this school more than prepared for college. He always, and we always, found the teachers more than willing to help in any way they could to help my son be successful this year. His Spanish II teacher took him from struggling with understanding her as they use total immersion style of teaching with only spanish spoken, to moving to becoming fluent by years end. All his teachers were fabulous. He will not have a 4.0 after his first semester of senior year, which will be sent with transcripts to colleges along with Junior year,he will with a good first semester be a little over 3.8. But a 3.8 resulting from a rigorous curriculum with AP and college level courses will be more highly viewed than a 4.0 resulting from a curriculum of easy regular courses. Now that is an unweighted 3.8 as Stanford ohs doesn’t weight GPA’s.I totally recommend this school. My son has flourished in it. Niche rates OHS number three just behind the two phillips Academies and I have read that ohs curriculum and workload is even more rigorous than theirs, but you want to be challenged and you want to be prepared for college. That’s what we wanted for our son.Hope this helps in some way.
Sorry he took five AP classes year before last in homeschool, then three AP’s at ohs this last year.
Congrats on getting in. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of data available online
