@madredos That’s great, makes life a lot easier! It’s tough turning down a prestigious scholarship like the Robertson at UNC/Duke, that’s a lot of money to turn down for someone else to take at already an elite research university. Chapel Hill is one of the nicest college towns in the country, your D will love it there congrats!
If you are willing to pay a lot of money for both of them to go to Stanford – first of all, that is very kind of you.
Stanford is certainly one of the best schools in the world.
But UNC and USC are excellent in their own right, and UF is good and improving.
Free rides to UNC and USC (or UF) are unbelievably good values. Should they choose the free rides, imagine what you could do with the $$$ you saved!
To answer your question: Yes, I think you should sit back and let them choose. They really can’t make wrong choices, can they, as long as they choose the right fit.
Stanford definitively NOT worth $200K+ over the other choices for either area of interest. The caliber of USC students overlaps Stanford to a good degree (50%+). Grad school acceptance is more about what the student does in undergrad and objective grades and standardized tests. They will wind up with same opportunities and at exact sameplace.
@SoProudofMyChildren - love your name.
We have a Tar Heel. One down, one to go. Thanks, everyone, for your advice and wisdom.
my bet is you will soon have a Trojan too!
@menloparkmom - That made me laugh. Thanks!
Like the new logo. Here’s the official seal of the school.

what CC logo are you going to use if DD #2 goes to USC?
@ryanstark - Oh, that is beautiful. Will have to switch to that one.
@menloparkmom - I will have to figure out how to make a half and half one! But I think we will be down to the May 1 wire before I have to learn those skills.
@ryanstark - Thanks! I love that one. Now I am off to buy some gear…
Congrats!
I’m partial to the Jordan-era basketball unis, but the design they’ve been wearing (that “threaded diamond” piping down the sides of the jersey and shorts…) for the past 20-25 years has been nice too.
@madredos though I’m thrilled one of the girls has officially made her decision, I am also a little sad. One less chance to have you as a comrade. Sigh. When/if #2 chooses a Cali school we’ll have to plan our trips out there together! If not, Fl get togethers it will be.
@cardinal2020mom - Made our flight arrangements for Admit Weekend, Wed to Sat. Let’s talk tomorrow! Go to bed.
Just took some time to reread this thread now that both kids have decisions. This community is truly a gift. In the end, we have one Tar Heel and one Gator. UNC was the easy one. The second decision went right down to the wire but ultimately after revisiting all 3 schools, Stanford, USC, and UF, she found that she loved them all equally and when you love everything equally, free is a very good thing. Do I wish one of them had been her true love, like UNC was for her sister? Yep. I have felt for a while that UF was what she wanted in her heart of hearts (even if she won’t admit it) so hopefully she has made the right decision.
Best wishes!
Congratulations!
Nice avatar.
@Madredos- Congratulations! I have been following this thread. My daughter was also awarded the Robertson Scholarship, and will be attending Duke. She turned down her two Ivy admissions for the Robertson; the decision was solely her’s.
Now, for the big WooHoo… UNC is a great choice My son just graduated from Carolina last week. He describes the last four years as the very best years of his life, and as a parent, I have to agree. There is just something about that school; if your kid loves Carolina, Carolina will love her right back. There is such a good balance of academics and social life. Welcome, my fellow Tar Heel, your D is going to have an amazing time there.
@madredos: Congratulations on knowing where you will be making visits for the next four years!
