Stanford/UCs/USC/Other Top Schools: Do I have a realistic chance?

I guess I’ll start with the basic background info (this might be a long read, so thank you for your time!):

Race: African American
Gender: Female
State: CA
Income Level: Almost exactly 100k
Financial Aid?: YES!
Education: First Generation

Alright now for my academic record. I feel pretty solid about my stats until it comes down to my SAT scores:

School Type: Large Public (4500 students) I’d say it’s moderately competitive? We’re ranked top 10% in the nation if that’s helpful in any way
GPA: 4.0 UW/4.5 W
Class rank: School doesn’t rank, but top 5-10% of about 900 for sure. (Invitation to the UC Eligibility Index program confirms this.)
SAT: 1320 on the New SAT w/ minimal prep. I am studying very hard over the summer to prepare for the test in October. That will be my last time taking it.
SAT II’s: USH: 660, Math II: 660
ACT: N/A
AP/Honors Course load: Honors Chemistry, AP World History (5), Honors Pre-Calc, AP Eng. Lang. (4), APUSH (5), AP Physics 1 (2…not gonna lie. I dropped the ball there)
Senior Year Course Load: AP Physics 2, AP Lit, AP Government & Politics/AP Macroeconomics (same class), AP Calc AB, Spanish 4, Studio Jazz Singers (Selective, Most Advanced), Varsity Track & Field (All sports are also classes here)

-Note: I’ve taken the most rigorous courses offered to me throughout HS. If there was an accelerated/honors/AP version of a course I took the highest level. Average students take about 3-4 AP classes by the time they graduate, the competitive ones around 5-8.

Academic Awards/Honors: Nothing major nationally like Intel or USAMO, but I have a few honors that solidify me as a top student in my class:
-Distinguished Scholars Program (Smaller academic society that must maintain above a 3.5, take X amount of APs etc…)
-Principal’s Highest Honor Roll (9-12)
-AP Scholar (Would’ve been w/ Honor but grr…Physics!)
-Posse Foundation Scholarship Nominee (Our school could nominate 15 students to compete)
-Pepperdine University Youth Citizen Ship Seminar Participant (School nominated 4 to apply, only 1 was chosen to join 249 other scholars from around Cali)
-Z Girls (explained below)

Here’s the list of all my ECs in order of most time consuming/leadership (Shorthanded of course). I’ll be cutting the list down come application time to make sure I present a clear image of myself:

-JV Track (9-10), Varsity Track (11-12), Captain of Varsity (12) I’m fast enough to be recruited to D2 schools and lower, but not D1 :frowning:
-Choir (9-12), Studio Jazz Singers Most Advanced choir of 14 girls, Chamber Singers (11-12) [Most Advanced Mixed Choir]
-Founder & President of Engineering & Robotics club.(11-12) Have 25-30 loyal members and raised over 500$ in 2 months. Currently working on raising funds as we continue our project of building battlebots for Homecoming fair next year
-Young Black Scholars Club (9-12), VP (11), President (12) Club is support source of ~50 black students. We promote academic excellency, do various outreach projects etc. For example: This year we hosted a Walk-A-Thon with people from the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation on our own track and raised over 2000$ for the foundation, competed in a state-wide Black History Quiz Bowl etc.

  • CSF (9-12)/NHS (11-12) Treasurer (11), President (12) Everyone has this so I wont explain this one.
-Female Leadership Academy (9-12) (Leader of Budget Committee (12) I think this one is self-explanatory too. It’s about 45 girls and we had to apply, write entry essay and be interviewed.
  • Gospel Choir Club Member (10-12)
-Z Girls- Service club comprised of the top 25 most active senior girls who also have the highest academic achievement of their class (12)

Community Service:

  • Each summer I volunteer at a rec. park with kids ages 6-13 from economically disadvantaged areas. I tutor them in all subjects/ mentor them etc. I do this while also going to track camp throughout the entire summer. (approx: 200 hours)
-Designated Tutor for Athletes: Tutoring is only offered right after school from teachers so my counselor appointed me to be an athletic tutor after practice hours so us fellow athletes can practice and keep our grades up. I’m assigned to math and science subjects (~10 hrs/week more or less)
-The rest of my hours are from various club activities…

Now for my school list! Now I do know my list is top heavy, but that is because these top schools will give me enough financial aid (hopefully) to not burden my parents.

-Stanford REA [Management Science & Engineering] Absolute first choice! Perfect blend of business and lightweight engineering
-Uchicago [Economics]
-USC [Marshall School of Business]
-UC Berkeley- ]Business Admin./ Accounting?] Idk yet…
-UC Santa Barbara - Same as above
-Pepperdine University [Business Admin.]
-Cal Poly SLO [Business/Accounting?]

Based on what I’ve done in school these are the majors I think I want to study. I’m not too worried about these mega reaches though because if all else fails, I’ll have a spot waiting for me at UC Merced :D. As for the AP Physics 1 score…my teacher ran that class like an engineering class (so he says). So we spent the bulk of our time building things using physics concepts than exam prepping . I truly love physics but should have studied in the way that College board was grading! All is well though. I would appreciate any and all advice!

I think the URM will help you a lot, and if you get your test scores up, you’ll be good to go. However, the 1320 is going to be hard to increase to 1460+. Stanford is a reach no matter what, and USC and UCB are lower reaches too. I think you’ll have a good chance at the other schools.

Chance back?

URM status will not be considered by the UC’s, so extra bump there.
You look like a competitive applicant and Stanford is always a Reach. The rest of the schools are within your reach, but bumping up your SAT score into the 1400+ range will help.

Good Luck.

You really should retake both SAT I and IIs (1500+ and 750+ would be great), and you might also want to try the ACT this September. Your GPA and ECs are strong and definitely make you a competitive applicant for all the schools you listed, and your URM/First Gen status should help as well. Of course, one can never quite predict what will happen at these very selective schools. Good luck!

I’m honestly just going to group the schools to apply without looking, though I guess they are all selective. Basically off the back, the scores, no matter what, will not get looked at in most cases of the schools you are looking at. The EC’s are decent, but not great. It doesn’t look like you actually have a favorite thing to do and are just spread out across your school to look good for colleges (This may not be the case, just saying). The URM thing is good and all but will not carry you into these schools. Anyways, you’re not really competitive with those scores, and improve if you want to look good.

Also, the GPA won’t mean one thing with the scores, they will only think the GPA is inflated by the school.
I don’t mean this as rude, just harsh criticism, I apologize.
