Most colleges including Ivy League schools had their endowment investment go down over the past year. I don’t follow stocks much. Didn’t the stock market go up this year? My Facebook stock and mutual fund did pretty well.

I’m not sure what the reporting period is for Stanford and other schools, but yes that link does say on average university endowments had a negative return this year. There are also some - Yale I believe is an example - that had positive returns, but withdrew more than the gains and thus still had a net decline in endowment.
IIRC endowment payout and federal government funding are just about equal at Stanford right now.
