Stanford vs IIT

I have come in Top 10 on IIT-JEE and also got undergraduate admission to Stanford. I am interested in Computer Science/Electrical Engg/Nanotechnology. I'm in a fix right now regarding where to go.
Currently, I feel IIT is more focused on academics and graduating from there gives wider options, both in India and abroad. Besides, there is no trouble of personal adjustment that I'll face in a new country. At the same time, Stanford will give me better exposure and has a more 'practical' education. Most of all, Stanford is the 'incubator' of entrepreneurship. But Stanford seems 'less focused' on academics as compared to IIT.
It's a real close call for me, so please help me out with your valuable suggestions. Thanks for your time.

The deadline for accepting admission was May 1st. Why are you deciding now? Are you a transfer student?

Stanford will give you a broader education and will expand you academic horizons beyond science: you will be exposed to the humanities, the social sciences, etc. More importantly, Stanford will foster you personal welfare more: you will be exposed to different cultures, people with different academic interests, and American culture. IIT will probably be more focused on academics and you will probably learn more advanced material there. However, your options with a Stanford degree will be equal to your options with an IIT degree.

On the technical side, I might give it to IIT at the undergraduate level. However, if you plan to live in the US or work for a US company I'd think that Stanford probably has slightly better name recognition (although any Engineering manager worth his salt would know what the IIT is).

deadline=may 1st. It is impossible that you could be deciding between IIT and Stanford now. I smell a troll.....

You're sense of smell isn't very good. He's obviously accepted both the offers as the universities are in two different countries. When you accept an offer, you are saying that if you go to university in that country, you will go to that one.

Jesus. So suspicious. What are you Sherlock or something>

IIT--jee results were declared on May 31. Obviously I am not committing any wrong.

Is Stanford giving you financial aid? That would probably be an important consideration. The quality of life at Stanford will be much better than IIT's.

"Currently, I feel IIT is more focused on academics and graduating from there gives wider options, both in India and abroad."

Are you insane about IIT giving you "wider options"?? :) IIT is a tech school that's well-known among engineers. However:

a) In terms of the "well-known" bit: IIT is not know at all among the general public in the US (and presumably throughout the world). Among engineers and the general public, it's hard to find a school anywhere in the world with a better overall reputation than Stanford.

b) In terms of the "focused on academics" bit: the average IIT student may be more of a "grind" than the average Stanford student (or the average Harvard student ... or even the average Caltech student). But you'll still learn more than you ever need to know.

My feeling (somewhat biased as a narrow-minded American) would be that many IIT graduates would aspire to eventually attend a place like Stanford for graduate school ... and perhaps some "top" ones do. Especially given all of the opportunities in Silicon Valley. In my mind, this would give you much more of a chance to become the leader who is planning and doing the "outsourcing," rather than becoming a fine Indian-trained engineer who ultimately gets "outsourced" by the Stanford or Berkeley grad.

IMHO, don't blow this decision!!!

Having visted IIT Delhi and Stanford, the students at IIT Delhi seemed to be in awe of stanford when i told them that's where i'll be going. They talked about how it was there goal to get into a stanford, cornell, or berkeley for rad school. If you start off at stanford sooo may more door will open.
Hands down - go to Stanford

Just ask yourself a few questions:
1.Do you want to work in the US?
2. Do you think you are mentally prepared to move to another country and study there?
3. Will you be able to afford the cost of education at Stanford?

If you answer yes to all the above three uestions, then go to Stanford. Stanford is an amazing university and it is definitely better than a IIT. As zavaind said, it is the goal of IIT grads to go to a uni like Stanford for their MS or Phd. You have the chance to go there for ur UG. Its ur decision ultimately and you need to decide where you will be more comfortable.

jedi why are you deciding now? Stanford Response deadline was may 1 unless you were waitlisted?? I personally think Stanford would give you a better overall experience and it is very very well known everywhere. Good luck whereever you go!
