IIT vs Stanford

I have come in Top 10 on IIT-JEE and also got undergraduate admission to Stanford. I am interested in Computer Science/Electrical Engg/Nanotechnology. I'm in a fix right now regarding where to go.
Currently, I feel IIT is more focused on academics and graduating from there gives wider options, both in India and abroad. Besides, there is no trouble of personal adjustment that I'll face in a new country. At the same time, Stanford will give me better exposure and has a more 'practical' education. Most of all, Stanford is the 'incubator' of entrepreneurship. But Stanford seems 'less focused' on academics as compared to IIT.
It's a real close call for me, so please help me out with your valuable suggestions. Thanks for your time.

Academic Rigour-- IIT-JEE .
opportunities, exposure, wordwide recognition -- Stanford

As for getting more options in India and abroad I think Stanford wins hands down because hwever well know IIT may be Stanford is Stanford
and u'll get instant recognition in all parts of the world not just India amd US....
The thing to ponder is whether u want the academic rigour ( and what is the benefit of that excess knowledge?) as compared to the over-all learning experience u get at Stanford..

If cost is not as issue I'll suggest Stanford but if u factor in the cost then IIT-JEE is much cheaper and equally good...

well firstly congratulations!

its a close call but as anirudh has stated- cost is not as issue I'll suggest Stanford but if u factor in the cost then IIT is much cheaper and equally good...

well i dunno if its true but a guy got a 99 ank in JEE and with that got a schol at MIT...try it with stanford...no harm...plus urs is top 10!

Leave your safety zone and go to Stanford, you'll love it. There's a big Indian population in Silicon Valley (which Stanford is at the center of) so you will find much of your culture at your doorstep if you want it to be. ITT is certainly amazing, but Stanford is much more well rounded. And I agree with the poster that said Stanford will help more most places on earth.

ok dude first off....I know people who have been to IIT and Stanford...although its really a BIG DEAL to go to IIT in the country...its mostly because of the JEE not because its better.....Next Stanford is better in practically everything...YOu say IIT has better focus on academics...well thats not entirely correct...Stanford is free..so basically if u want you can focus on academics (by all of the above tones...i think research and practical learning is not academics in your opinions) and make the environment like IIT...

ummm poster suze the dude is not asking abt ITT (its CRAP)..he is asking about the Indian Institutes of Technology (I.I.T)..

In the US and, in fact, in most places outside of India, only people who really know engineering recruiting recognise IIT. We recognise that it is a VERY good school, but Stanford has a name recognition that is worldwide. Everyone - even those beyond engineering - know Stanford. I feel that, if you plan to work anywhere outside of India, or if you hope to move outside of engineering someday (perhaps management?), then a Stanford degree will open more doors for you than one from IIT.

But it's a very personal choice. They are both great schools, and you'll get an excellent education at either one. The choice you make needs to be based on which you think fits you better.

Do you think you can handle the move to the US, and to California, and the differences in the academic and cultural systems? As another poster said, there are a lot of Indian students at Stanford, so there will be a community there for you to get some support from.

I think that you should contact Stanford's admissions office and ask them to put you in touch with another student from India, perhaps even one who is majoring in engineering or one of your other areas of interest. You can have an honest and open discussion with this person about what the adjustment was like.
