Many people say Stanford is one of the greatest schools in the U.S.? Cant a person get the same experience somewhere else?

Similar experience maybe, but never the Stanford experience.

The campus is truly breathtaking...

It IS an incredible school...

sure you can learn the same content at any other university, and yes, it is up to YOU, but still... Stanford has an amazing campus, world renowned faculty, unbeatable financial aid, multitude of educational opportunities (including internationally)... There are so many reasons why "top" schools such as Stanford are desirable (and "prestige" ranks low on the list compared to so many other things they could offer)

You can't get it anywhere else

I live in the bay area and visit stanford all the time. If you have never visited the school before than you really will never quite understand what we are talking about.

It is one of the great schools but there are quite a few others providing an equal, if different, experience.

I've never found Stanford to be as beautiful as the best New England/ E. Coast campuses, but maybe that's because I grew up in CA and the architecture and Palm treed setting was nothing special to me.

Great weather!

amen, hmom. Same gut feelings from our family: the New England campuses felt like "real" universities. Silly, but true.

Count me as another for whom the Stanford campus holds little appeal. Like hmom5, maybe that's because I was born and raised in CA.

Really? So I was not weird to think that way... I thought I was crazy...

Stanford was my top choice for the longest time... I was planning to apply EA there since Junior year. Then I looked at their pictures, and saw a bunch of palm trees and standard California mission style architecture... then I looked at Yale's pictures of snow, maple trees, gothic architecture, and impressive stone buildings... I changed my EA choice on a whim, simply based on the feel of the place.

But that other Californians also thought this is interesting...

Standford is a interesting school, but student body is too small. Standford also have a good location, but I have a hard time being able to see the campus well on google street view. Everyone seems to imply it's one of the best campuses.

I think I'd go to Stanford if I could attend any college in the country. So would Veronica Mars...

Please don't spell it like this.

Interesting about the campus appeal. As an east coaster the first time I visited Stanford (and the first time I had ever been on the west coast) I thought Stanford was so beautiful. The second time (when I accepted my offer) I also thought it was very beautiful...but now after six months its not nearly as beautfiul as I thought previously. Though my parents came for Parents weekend and were like wow a resort. So yeah...when you get use to it it seems like its not that special.

To answer the question...college is what you make of it. But, there's no doubt Stanford nudges you in the right direction towards making your experience as positive as possible =)

It's truly an amazing school. probably the best school in the US.

Every school is unique in its own way. Is there another Stanford? No. Is there another Berkeley, or UCLA, or Michigan or Yale?

NOPE.

Your experience is what you make of it. I have several friends who turned down Stanford/Harvard/Cornell/Columbia to go to UCLA, and they've each said they've never regretted it. But, neither have my friends who chose Stanford.

It's up to you! Good luck!

LOL RML I think you've posted that on like the last 4 threads I've looked on. I hope the adcom checks these sites, you're enthusiasm might getcha a foot in the door :P

UC Berkeley is also beautiful - The University of California Thread - Page 8 - SkyscraperCity

And so is UCLA - http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=309262&page=7

vc08, pardon my enthusiasm; I wasn't really promoting the site, but i thought the pictures on that site are interesting though not really updated.

I had great experiences at Stanford. I also had great experiences at the school I left to transfer to Stanford, and at the school I attended after graduating from Stanford.

No two schools are alike. But at the end of the day, schools in the top tier are not that dissimilar. Oenophiles can spend hours waxing poetic about the difference between one premium cabernet sauvignon and another. But at the end of the night, they're all hearty red wines that complement wonderfully a good steak.

^ haha! true, but "black and tans" (Guinness and Harp) matched well with corned beef tonight. ;)
