can anyone shed some light on the academic atmosphere at stanford? rigorous obviously, but is it cutthroat competitive?

<p>Rigorous, obviously, as you said. But it's not competitive at all. In fact, there's a strong emphasis on supporting each other in the Stanford culture. You'll likely find yourself in close-knit study groups for your harder classes. I even know people who have had problem-set-and-beer nights on a regular basis.</p>
<p>I absolutely second what Sly Si said. Courses are difficult, but people want to help each other succeed.</p>
