How does one go about starting a debate team at school?

We have a debate club at school with a sponsor and everything, but it's mostly social i.e. arguing good naturedly during lunch.

We tried to do a competitive team last year, and some interest was expressed, but only a couple people showed. I think that maybe we should have scheduled it better, when no one had conflicts.

anyways, we were just studying theory...not working towards an actual event so the president called it off in the spring.

help, please?

I never debated in high school, but I do know that the National Forensics League is the governing body for many high school debate teams. Perhaps you could try contacting them and asking for advice, I'm sure they would be more than willing to help, and your question must not be an uncommon one for them.

On a side note, the kid who started the highly successful debate team (policy debate) at my high school got into Harvard in 2003.

That's the official website with information on the page on how to open a chapter at your school.

I strongly encourage you to begin the club if you are interested in speech or debate. Good Luck!

question: how do you restart a debate team at your school if it was offered as a class but not enough people signed up to get the class to make?
