Starting an essay with a quotation?

This topic I'm sure has been asked repeatedly, but the last I checked, it's been months, SO I'll pose it again.

Is it generally frowned upon to start an essay with a quotation?

I was going to use a quote from my favourite author and talk about how much the author means to me, how much the quote means to me, and how the quote has changed my life. However, while half of me thinks it could be a great essay, the other half of me thinks this is extremely trite.

I'd love to hear multiple opinions on this.

It’s fine to use it as an opening hook… just don’t center your entire essay around your favorite quote, which is really trite. There’s a good example of that in 100 Successful College Application Essays which is entirely based off “the road less traveled” quote and it comes off as pretty shallow. I would just use your fav quote as a lead-in to a bigger point. :] There must be some other part of you or experience and not the quote ITSELF that changed your life? Like, instead of concentrating on the quote that changed your way of thinking, concentrate on the process of changing yourself.
