Using a quote to start a admission essay

Hey, what do you guys think about starting an admission essay off with a quote? do you think its too 5 paragraph style, or do you think that you can incorporate it into a good college app essay?

I think probably 80% of essays try to use a quote in that manner, I dont think it will help you or hurt you either way.

(thats statistic is my guess, I dont have anything to base it off of and I'm not an adcom)

thanks very much.

What does starting an essay with a quote have to do with five paragraph style?

I doubt that 80% of college essays start with quotes. Hopefully more people than that realize that it is, in general, a weak way to open an essay that is supposed to convey something about you, not about some other writer.

rttapuw I agree with you but what if instead of using a fmaous person quote, he use something that his parents, or anyone close to him always say? You know grandparents sometimes have some wise advice, and he can maybe use it as quote/motto. As you said usiong someone's quote might not reflect who you are but using a quote that is from a relative or close friends might be the little world that you repeat to stay strong before the obstacle

^ In my opinion, using a family member's quote would be quite personal and touching if you could successfully incorporate it into the message you give about yourself in the essay. But I'm not the one to give advice because I've yet to write a college essay xD
