Starting to doubt ED to UPenn?

I was planning on applying early decision to UPenn because I love it. I love the campus, the city, the food carts, the clubs, the toast-throwing atmosphere, and what I've heard about the people there.

However, I'm interested in pursuing journalism in the future and UPenn only offers journalism as a minor. I researched the Daily Pennsylvanian (and how I can continue journalism through this) and I've found some evidence as to why having a lack of a journalism major could be beneficial (opportunity to explore interests).

When I was writing my "why" essay, however, I felt like I was almost forcing myself to believe the benefits of just a journalism minor. People have asked me why I don't just go to a school like Northwestern, with a journalism school. I know I love journalism and I do want to major in it. I also know I love UPenn and I want to go there.

How to I resolve the contradictions of my loves? Oh, love is pain.

Ultimately, you have to reconcile that no matter which school you choose, you’ll be forced to sacrifice some things in lieu of others.

Personally, I think if you feel forced to justify to yourself the benefits of a journalism minor without truly believing what you’ve written, you may not be happy with the programme once you enter it. Now, I can’t speak for you, of course, so if you DO end up going to Penn, your opinion might change.

On the other hand, I think you should take the time to check out some schools with journalism majors. Have you toured Northwestern and gotten a chance to see student life in action? I feel like you can find things there that endear you as much as Penn, even if it’s not absolutely everything you desire.

I dunno! This sounds like a very tough decision, but I think your gut feeling will lead you to the right choice.

Best of luck! :)

Thanks, serefe! I did tour Northwestern, but it just didn’t have the same allure as Penn does to me. :stuck_out_tongue: Ultimately, though, I feel like the lack of a journalism major is a sacrifice I will gladly make. There are still so many internships, extracurriculars, etc. that I know I can take advantage of while I’m there. Someone else on CC directed me to the Kelly Writers House and UPenn’s Daily Pennsylvanian, which both seem like great opportunities for me to expand as a journalist. There are many UPenn alumni who went on to careers in journalism and so can I, if I get accepted.

Thanks for your input!
