Starting your freshman year in the spring semester!

Has any one else done this or known anyone who has? Rutgers normally does not allow the first semester to be deferred, but they are aloowing me because of a miltary obligation. So I am just wondering if anyone has heard of this and has insight on if its harder to make friends, and how my housing will be assigned.

Thank you

I don’t think it will be hard to make friends. Everyone is in the same boat.

I guess you would be assigned housing as a transfer. Call up Rutgers housing and ask:732 445 0750

I am also starting Spring semester because of military obligations, Army Basic and job training which will last July-November. You’re not the only one. I’m trying to find out what it will be like starting Spring semester as well.

I’ve heard it depends on your degree, and when they offer the required courses. If you’re doing ROTC you’ll have no trouble making friends, because you all will do stuff together every week. And housing shouldn’t be too hard to get as long as you apply early.

The way I look at it, although I’m missing the football season, and the whole experience of starting college with the other freshman, I’m gaining so much more. While they’re starting college, I’ll be training to become a Soldier, and going through a once in a lifetime experience that I’ll remember forever. I joined to do something different with my life, and it’s already starting. You just got to look at it in a positive way, not a stressful one. Plus, if you’re a guy, telling stories from Basic will be a great way to pick up girls, just saying.

Good Luck

That’s cool that I’m not the only one. And yea you’re probably right about the girls lol. Yes I am doing ROTC, and contracting through the SMP program after I get 30 credits. Where are you going for basic and what MOS if you don’t mind me asking.

Oh ok awesome. I’m planning to do ROTC and SMP as well once I get 30 credits. I enlisted in the Army National Guard, and I will be attending Fort Sill for Basic and AIT. My MOS is 13F, and I’ll be in an Infantry unit when I get back. Although I’m trying to switch to 11B before shipping. Still working on it. What about you? Where are you going for training and what’s your MOS? Also I’m planning to go Active when I commission, what about yourself?

I enlisted in the guard also, in November, and have been in RSP for awhile now, I guess you also have been there then. I leave July 11 for Fort Benning for 11B, and yes I plan to commission an active duty 2nd LT. I turned down applying for the ROTC scholarship for this, so I could get experience from the enlisted point of view to make me a better officer.

Yeah I enlisted in October and ship July as well, and I don’t know about your RSP, but I’m ready to get out of mine. Almost everyone hates our RSP, I guess because we never actually do anything. And it takes forever to get handed to your unit. You’re lucky btw, my state ran out of 11B slots. I’m gonna continue trying to switch to 11B until I ship. 13F is pretty sweet too though. I just really want that blue cord. And I actually did apply for the ROTC Scholarship, but went ahead and went this route for the same reason as you stated. And a higher starting salary when I commission. And plus the ROTC cadet command has not impressed me with the way they operate. Their whole system is really frustrating, and scholarship status never updates. SMP is the way to go.

Did you get a Bonus or Airborne in your contract?

What state are you in? I’m in NJ and it’s alright. It get old being in the same phase so many times but that’s what I get for enlisting when I did. And no I got no bonus and airborne in my contract, I am hoping to do airborne while in ROTC. So are you definitely going to Rutgers next year?

I’m in GA. I’ve read posts on the NG forum of people loving their RSP, but I’m just not liking ours too much. The NCO’s running it are great, I just haven’t done anything really exciting yet. The main thing is that it takes like 3 or more months to get handed to your unit after AIT, instead of the usual 1 month, which ****es everyone off. Good thing I’m going into a combat arms MOS, the training for that should be great. I’m hoping to get Airborne during ROTC as well, maybe even while at Basic if I perform well enough and am offered a slot, which are pretty hard to get for NG. And no, I’m going to college here in GA at the University of Georgia. I’ve already visited their ROTC program and the cadre seem pretty good. And they said ROTC cadets are put in the same housing. I’m really excited about it. I’m striving to commission Infantry, I guess you’re doing the same?

Our RSP is very intense. Get smoked all the time and it really does prepare us for basic. We have done many cool things such as room clearing, how to search and retain a detainee, how to access a casualty under fire, land nav. They do a good job running it. And yes I plan to commission infantry. And sorry I figured since this what the Rutgers forum you would be going there. I don’t believe we house our ROTC together but I am not too sure about that.

Yeah ours is strict too, that is a good thing about it. And I haven’t done any of those things you mentioned. All I’ve done is drill and ceremony, group discussions, PT, and paper work. But the whole military environment does help prepare us for Basic. Anyway though good luck with everything, and thanks for joining. I look forward to serving with you in the best Army in the world. Hooah

Good luck to you as well. Hooah
