Would anyone know about whether or not one would have to get a Missouri driver's license upon going to WUSTL or can we simply send in a renewal request through the mail to the home state? My state driver's license expires on September, so I would be really grateful if someone could clear up this issue for me. Thanks!

I would think it would depend upon where your permanent residence is. My son's license expired this year (he was a junior) and it was renewed in our home state.

Renew in home state --

The Missouri Department of Motor Vehicles Driving Guide states as follows:

Certain persons are not required to obtain a Missouri driver license. You do
not need a Missouri driver license if:
• You are a member of the armed forces and you have a valid driver
license from your home state.
• You are a full-time student and you have a valid driver license from your
home state.
• You operate or temporarily operate/move any farm tractor or implement
on a highway for agri-related purposes.

You can see the whole handbook at http://dor.mo.gov/mvdl/drivers/dlguide/dlguide.pdf (the quoted text is on page 8).

If possible, just renew your license right before you leave for school (if your state has a time-frame of when you can renew it. Mine is up in March, so I'm renewing it in late December during the winter break).

you should be able to renew it before you leave.

Thanks for all the helpful comments! I think I'll try to renew my license prior to leaving for WUSTL.

Are you going to be a freshman? If so, I probably wouldn't mess with the Missouri license, you won't be driving around St. Louis since you won't be allowed to have a car... Otherwise yeah, just renew it. I'm going to be pulling the plug on my liability insurance, etc, during my freshman year to save some money.
