State Grants from OOS College's State?

Quick question, can you get state grants from the state of an OOS college that you are attending? Or is it only residents?

I searched the web for a bit and couldn’t find any answers, it’s a bit of a hard question to Google. Thanks!

At almost all public schools state grants are only available to residents of the state because the grants are funded by the resident taxpayers.

It’s only residents.

There are some reciprocy agreements. For example for the PHEAA grant.

But it is rare. Our kids stayed instate because we qualified for a $3,000 + state grant.

@mommdc I believe the OP is asking if he can get a sate grant from the sate he is attending school in as an OOS student. That would never occur. A Massachusetts resident cannot get a PHEAA grant to attend a college in PA.

Right…there are some small grants in our state that can be used OOS by our instate students …but OOS students cannot get our state low income grants at all.

As an example, both the Calgrant and TAP grants are for instate students only. OOS students are not eligible to receive these awards.

Does anyone know when you are notified whether or not you are eligible for a PHEAA grant? My oldest attends school OOS so it didn’t apply, but I’d love to know whether this can be factored into the decision for my S20 and D21 if they stay in state.

Sorry, if I wasn’t clear. Some states allow their residents to use state grants at schools in reciprocal states.

But I agree, you wouldn’t get state grants from a state you aren’t a resident of.

Pell Grant are federal and can be used at any school that participates in the Federal Aid program.

Merit scholarships might be available at OOS schools.

@OceanIsle for the PHEAA grant I think FAFSA and PA state grant form have to be filed before May 1 and a PA school be listed first in the FAFSA.

My kids could access the state grant website in late May I think to see their PHEAA grant eligiblity.

Net price calculators of instate colleges gave us an estimate of the state grant we might receive (we didn’t qualify for Pell).

The one exception I can think of is the Benacquisto Scholarship for NMF in Florida. It is a state grant and is awarded to OOS students to use in Florida.
