State Representation?

Is Texas well-represented at Duke, and if not, would I have any sort of small advantage by being a Texan?

I think the only states where applicants would have a clear advantage would be the carolinas, because of James B. Duke's wishes. I can't imagine Duke placing too much emphasis on having a balance of states since you know...you could always move.

The only other thing I can think of is that Duke might like west coast kids a bit more, just like how I heard stanford likes east coast kids. But that might be false and hearsay.

Actually, TX is really well represented. If anything, you'd be at a disadvantage, because Duke is pretty much the undisputed top school in the south.

i don't think that that duke/stanford theory is true

Must be hearsay then, though I'm sure I heard something to that effect a while ago.

it very well might be true... the reason i don't think it is though is b/c i've never heard it... and i would think, if it really did seem true, that people would talk about it often like they do about the whole carolinas and duke ordeal

I doubt that considering 44% of the students at Stanford are from California according to the Collegeboard.

I think that's the whole point of the rumor...supposedly stanford is trying to attract students from the east, vice versa for Duke...

You won't have an advantage coming from Texas. Duke is, in my opinion, fairly represented from basically all 50 states. The fact that there are so many NC kids at Duke is because like 95% of its best students apply (and get in) because they are better applicants than others; there is no intended bias towards in-state students.

I thought that one of the reasons the Duke family gave money to Duke was to establish a school to serve the educational needs of students in the carolinas? That provision could be interpreted in ways as to be beneficial for students from the carolinas. That is not to say that students from the carolinas are inferior in any way to students from other states.

Yeh I thought Duke is required to take a certain number of kids from the Carolinas.

Anyway, I'm from Texas, and I know a lot of other Texans too. Probably no advantage there seeing as Duke is the most prestigious university in the south.
