State vs. Well Known UGrad and chances at Stanford (or other top 25)

I'm a junior tossing around some choices about transferring out of University of Tennessee Knoxville. The two main possibilities are Georgia Tech or MTSU (Middle Tenn State U) and I'd like to know how this decision could potentially affect acceptance to top b-schools, if at all? I'd actually like to work near Palo Alto after I graduate, so moving isn't a problem.

I'm not in engineering and I'm starting to have second thoughts about going into the CM program at Gatech. (too heavy CS) The only other thing I could see myself doing is there is business, or one of the liberal arts degrees. But if tech isn't going to significantly help me, then should I save my money and take digital media/business classes at MTSU right? Also, what if I get nearly full aid, then what?

This is an MBA forum. You should the thread move to College Selection.

Since the question is about how my choice of college and or major will affect future MBA acceptance, I feel that I will get more relevant and less speculative answers from people who have gone through it.

Most importantly, where can you receive a quality job out of? Secondarily, can you maintain a good GPA at that University?

The name of the university won't mean much but if you can't get a quality job out of that University where you will be able to grow your career, you will not be a good MBA candidate.

"Most importantly, where can you receive a quality job out of?

Mtsu is extremely well known with Nashville businesses for their 'music production' and 'music business' program. Other than that they don't have much. On the other hand Georgia tech is fairly well known everywhere and has a huge variety of fantastic career services and internship opportunities. By this logic, I think I'm understanding that I should go to tech regardless of major, unless I want to do music business. Even if it costs more the job opportunities presented to previous alumni in all majors have been head and shoulders better than the local state school.

Now I just need to decide between 'Digital Media' and 'Business & Technology', but alas that's for another forum.

P.S. - Thanks for the help. I'm feeling much more confident about my decisions now.

I would look closely at placement numbers for the two universities and let that help guide you. If those numbers aren't published on the website, contact career services of each school. People have certainly gotten into top MBA programs from worse universities...it is just tougher to do.

Do you mean placement for jobs in general, or how many got into a top B-school? I haven't been able to find any numbers on the sites so far but I'll check into that.

Placement for jobs, in particular for your planned major. Placement for top business schools is a largely irrelevant stat.
