Hey! I’m a sophomore in high school right now and my dream school is UMich for Ross. I feel like I’m lacking in extracurriculars but have really good stats. I’m also out of state so I have more of a disadvantage. My freshman year I had very few extracurriculars (some had to do with business) and sophomore year I definitely did a lot of more (writing articles, tutoring, an internship, held a few projects and a campaign on a topic I cared about). I’m planning on taking a lot more leadership roles junior year that involve business and making other clubs that I’m passionate about. I’ll also be in other clubs such as National Honors Society. Everyone I’ve been talking to about UMich lately says it’s extracurriculars and essays that are important which worries me because I feel like I may have not done enough and that crowding leadership roles junior year will look bad. The things I started 10th grade I’m going to continue doing but I’ll also be starting new things 11th grade which might make it look like I didn’t commit to a club/ activity. ALSO, I’d like to add a lot of my extra curriculars this year werent part of a school or organization and I did it on my own, so would this still count? I know I just asked A LOT but please answer ANYTHING that you can
Ross is super hard to get into, but work on your grades and your essay, stay w clubs that mean something to you and hopefully use them to show you have grown with that club.
So you might want to review the Ross threads from this year and go back a year or two. See the types of activities people are doing to get an idea.
Michigan in general usually wants besides grades and rigor of the classes you to do a few things well and things you care about. So doing 2-3 things that tell a story (brand) about who you are instead of someone that joins 10 clubs. So commitment and consistency seem to be themes. These can be within your school time or outside activities. What you wrote is plenty. Keep doing those if you have interests in them. Do not do actives just because you think Michigan wants to see them. This is where kids go wrong. If they have meaning to you then you will be able to write about them for essays etc with passion and commitment.
Also try not to have a dream school. Michigan is tough to get into and Ross is even tougher. Make it one of your schools that if you got into you would love to attend.
