Subjective:
Essays: I talked about the importance of Model U.N, and how it helped me get past my father’s extramarital affairs. It had a lot of personal significance for me, I’m just glad I was able to write it. The second essay had to do with transferring high schools during Junior year, and how it was like discovering another culture.
Teacher Recs: I’m almost certain that this was how I got in.
Counselor Rec: I love my counselor, I imagine that it was fairly good.
Hook (if any): I’m not quite sure what a hook is. I certainly wasn’t recruited for Athletics.

I spent the last few months cringing in terror for this day - my test scores are certainly in the lower end for the SFS, and I was almost certain that I would be deferred because of them. I can only thank my history teacher and counselor for their letters of recommendation, they made this happen.

Subjective:
Essays: Best part of my application, especially my SFS essay. I wrote about female illiteracy in developing nations. I think I spent 30 hours of research on it. My personal and EC were strong as well.
Teacher Recs: I didn’t see it, but it was probably very good. My teacher has been teaching for 51 years now, and he said I was one of his best.
Counselor Rec: Didn’t see this one either, but I was one of her favorites I suppose.
Hook (if any):
I chose to focus on my rather extensive political background for someone my age. My two non-school specific essays discussed my political background in depth. I also had a lot of leadership experience both in and outside my school, and a lot of random merit awards.

Location/Person:
State or Country: Illinois
School Type: Extremely competitive prep school.
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Legacy Yes/No: No
Recruited Yes/No: No
Important ECs:
Various choruses for 13 years of my life. NHS Exec Board, Vice President of the Law Club, Associate Media Director of my county’s Democratic Party, 3rd highest position in School Student Government, 3 separate political campaigns, guest speaker alongside David Wilhelm (former DNC chairman) at a downtown Chicago fundraiser for a woman running for US House. Other awards, including Model UN. Cross Country & Track varsity letter winner.

Other Factors: I had a strong interview. I decided to take a risk and tell my interviewer some “uncool” facts about me as a person, such as my secret knowledge of Greek Mythology and Harry Potter obsession. I used self-deprecating humor and I tried to relate to my interviewer as a person.

In my opinion, it seems like Georgetown stepped back and took a look at the total person this year, rather than simply stats and scores. Most of the students applying are perfectly qualified to handle the work load at Georgetown. My stats themselves are middle of the road for SFS applicants, but I really think that it was my personality and obvious passion for my future major that helped me get in. I suggest that people who were deferred or are applying now put more of an emphasis on themselves-- no one wants a robot at their college, even if that robot has a 2400 sat score.
