<p>After talking to a virtual counselor and consulting the [UCLA</a> College Blue Petition](<a href=“http://collegecounseling.ucla.edu/blue.html]UCLA”>http://collegecounseling.ucla.edu/blue.html) page, it appears you can attempt to petition for BOTH unit cap and duration of stay.</p>
<p>It is under Maximum Units section where it says “If you will be going into your 5th year, or 3rd year for transfer students, you will need to explain why you need additional units. Your explanation should include your academic reasoning for additional time and units.”</p>
<p>In conclusion, yes you can go over BOTH unit cap and duration, long as you petition and get approved.</p>
