Steinhardt Audition

Just wondering…
what is the sightreading audition like, and how much does it affect admission (if anyone can guess)? I’v ehad years of choir, a year of piano and a couple weeks of a theory class, but I’d still be hesitant to sing a line of music I’ve never heard before by myself. Can anyone give advice?

Also, on a different point, is it possible to double major within Steinhardt with the BM degree?
Thanks!

Hi tannerjacob,

I’m going to be heading to Steinhardt as a freshman next fall! The sightreading happens all together with the rest of the audition. They just give you a sheet of paper that has about a 12-bar melody on it and you are supposed to sight read it-really not a big thing. When I did it, they seemed impressed with my sight reading skills, and I think it helped in my audition, but I’m not sure that it’s a deciding factor. All you really need to know is rhythms and solfege-do re mi and so on (or at least that’s how I did it!) because they give you the starting note.

I don’t think it is possible to double major (go look at the curriculum online-it’s intense!), but some of the people there told me that since I got some credits out of the way through AP, and I could probably minor in something.

Good luck!

It is very hard to double major if you are trying to do it in 8 semesters. If you add summers, it may be possible. D has 2 minors–english literature and the business of entertainment, media and technology. She has been able to do that by taking 18 or 19 credits/ semester and starting with about 12 AP credits that were accepted by NYU. She may need to take 2 extra credits next year also that we will pay additional $ for.
