Steinhardt or Gen. Studies? Help my son make a decision.

My son has a very low GPA, horrble 9th grade year but big steady incline since, his SAT's are 1990 600cr 690 m 690 w 12 essay, he took the SAT S's this past Sat. He applied to Steinhardt reg. decision HOWEVER since finding out about the g.studies program, is wondering if he should applied there instead. What do you think? He could possibly still change this if he called and/or wrote a letter. OR do you think if they don't want to accept him for Steinhardt they will automatically consider him for G.S.? This is all new to us, please help.

He got good recs. and his english teacher said his essay is one of the best he has seen in a long time (he does not give out compliments easily) overall his essays were a strong component of his application. Nice EC's, parents did not graduate from college, mixed culturally, and that about sums it up! Plesae let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

You cannot apply to GSP

You can only go to GSP if you are deferred from Steinhardt

As people have mentioned, you do not apply directly to GSP, applications are referrerd from other NYU undergrad colleges.
It's all on the web page:
NYU > A & S > About GSP

Steinhardt is a professional school with a lot of different programs. Which is he applying for? It is not a liberal arts college, and if he is not leaning pre-professional (Teaching, Applie Psych, Speech Therapy, Nutrition, Art, Music, etc) it would not be a good place for him. In Art or Music (with an audition/ portfolio) these scores might cut it, but generally, from what you say, he would be a marginal candidate and probablly not get refererd to GSP.

You need a Plan B.
