STEM scholarship?

Just throwing this out there, but does anyone know anything about the Second Century Scholars Scholarship Program? From what I gather, it is basically a scholarship for students wishing to enter any science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) major. This includes my prospective major, Information Analysis.

The stats:
"Potential applicants must meet the following criteria to apply for the SCS scholarship:
Entering freshmen in the 2010-11 class
SAT 1200 or higher in the math and verbal combined score (ACT equivalent is 27)
GPA 3.5 or higher (performance in science, technology and mathematics courses will receive additional consideration)
Demonstrated interest and commitment to study in a STEM area
Declaration of major in a designated STEM area"

I fit the criteria and am going to apply for it, but I am just wondering if anyone knows just how many of these scholarships are awarded. It pays for 3/4 of in-state tuition, and while I'm OOS, this money could still be quite helpful!

Thanks :)

Hey jemaineclement,

I am a Second Century Scholar, so I have all those numbers for you!! Currently only sophomores and freshmen hold these scholarships because it was started 2 years ago, but there are 9 bio/biotech majors (5 soph, 4 fresh), 8 chemistry majors (5 soph, 3 fresh), 3 comp sci, 12 engineering, 2 geology, 6 ISAT/Info Analysis, 11 Math, 10 Physics.
They seem to putting more scholarships into the majors that they are trying to recruit (engineering, math, physics), not by proportion of students in each majors (biology would definitely have the most) because there was a larger number of freshmen this year who received them in the recruited majors. Currently there is one freshman Information Analysis major holding a STEM scholarship, but that could be for lack of qualified applicants or the fact that they added in more ISAT scholarships (1 soph, 5 fresh).
If you have anymore questions, feel free to PM me.
Basically, I would go ahead and apply… what do you have to lose?? :)

Thanks so much clcgirl_1999! This is great info, especially coming right from a Second Century Scholar. I think I’m going to go for it and hope for the best since it seems like a great opportunity. Thank you again!

My S has been offered a STEM scholarship at JMU. He also has been accepted at UVA, VT, and others. I was wondering whether anyone knows how challenging JMUs STEM program is, what opportunities that STEM scholars have that non-STEM students have, and whether there is something that the JMU STEM program offers over the other engineering programs that are generally considered the best programs at VA state schools. Thanks in advance for any info.

My son has also received a Second Century Scholars scholarship. So far as we can tell, you take the money and run. There’s no program – it’s not the Honors Program. The student needs to maintain a 3.25 GPA to keep the award; he may need to get a 3.25 every year, not just a 3.25 overall – not sure about that.

The award pays 75% of tuition and fees from the freshman year; in other words, tuition will go up in subsequent years, but the scholarship does not.

In terms of opportunities, the Dept Chairman told us to make sure that he’s placed in the honors class in Geology (his major) as a freshman; and I guess it looks good on resumes.

Jdalu75…if he has great grades his first semester, honors WILL again ask him to apply. Same happened with my daughter.
