Step-Parents as Legacies

My step-mom went to Yale undergrad and Northwestern for law school, and I was wondering if that counts as a legacy? I’m already a legacy at Yale (dad went there), so I’m wondering more about Northwestern, but also curious to know if this could boost my legacy at Yale. Or will putting down on my app that my step-mom went there seem like I’m just desperate for a hook (like saying you’re one sixteenth Native American) and end up hurting my chances? Thanks!

Every school counts legacy differently so you would need to get Northwestern’s definition of legacy.

Many highly selective schools only look at undergrad as a legacy, not grad or professional schools. How Northwestern defines legacy can only be answered by Northwestern (though you may find some knowledgeable folks on the Northwestern board too).

If you’re asking whether a stepmother “counts,” my answer is: if she has the role of a parent in your life, absolutely.

LOL. Choose your step parents carefully!
