Stern FAQ's

What are the facilities like? I heard they were kind of dumpy, but this was coming from a UM/Ross kid, so he would be biased.

after all the renovation thats been going on, it will be amazing by end of next year.

NYU Stern Concourse Project - Learn More About Stern's Transformative Renovation

Hi, Im looking to transfer from Bentley University to NYU stern. I wanted to know if it would be hard to get in if I currently have a 3.8 GPA, but have done abslotuely no extracurricular activities? I also wanted to ask whether there were a lot of international students from Latin America or not? And in general, are people cool.

How is marketing at Stern? Is it rigorous & is it difficult to find marketing-related internship? Also, is it possible to minor in Art History at CAS if I go to Stern?

@dee

Stern is ridiculously hard to transfer to. everyone i know that transferred had 4.0s and a lot of extracurricular activities. not many people leave Stern, so there are not that many transfer spots.

@dee

You can get into Stern with lower than a 4.0. I knew quite a few kids with high 3.8s, but they did have significant extracurricular activities/internship experience. I also heard some kids get in with 3.6's, but I can't vouch for that info.

I think it never hurts to apply.

Quite a few people do leave Stern. I think 50+ kids left Stern last year and about 100+ transferred in internally and externally. I've only met a few transfers and they came from such schools as: Georgetown, Rutgers, John Hopkins, Cornell. Some kids leave for another major, others because of the competitive atmosphere, others because they cannot handle New York, others to transfer into ivies, and others because NYU isn't prestigious enough.

Less than 20% of students are international. Most of Stern's international students, from my experience, come from Asia and Eastern Europe.

Cool is relative.

What major would have most helped my chances at Stern?

When I applied, I put down the BPE program, which right now, doesn't seem like it was a good choice, considering how many other qualified applicants applied for it. The program seemed like a perfect fit for me, guess it was a perfect fit for 500+ other people as well. I get my decision letter soon. =/ But I'm guessing because i didn't receive a likely letter, and the fact that it's stern, means I didn't get in.

Do Stern students do case studies regularly? What’s the curriculum like?

Is study abroad entirely funded by the school (i.e. paid for with our hefty school fees)?

2-3 case studies are done in all finance courses. you pay the same tuition for studying abroad, just a different room and board depending on the location

The 10 day junior trip is funded by tuition and fees. If you chose to study abroad for a semester you can apply for additional aid. I got $2,500 in additional scholasrhips plus room was $2,600 cheaper in Prague then NYC so my folks saved $4,600.

So it might actually be cheaper to study abroad, huh? But how about air tickets; is it provided for by the school?

No. You buy you own tickets. Also, no CWS or any jobs overseas. So save up for your travel and other needs. Since it was $4,600 less expensive for my folks and since study abroad had no meal plan, my parents transferred $250 every two weks to my checking account. You live off of your debit/credit cards and ATM withdrawls.

The Czech republic requires you to provide bank information and notarized copy of credit cards before they issue a student visa.

I guess they want to make sure you have the financial wherewithal to stay in the country.

What is NYU’s relationship with Chelsea Piers? When I look up the exercise facilities Chelsea Piers comes up on the NYU website.

Hey everybody!

So currently I am a rising Sophomore in NYU CAS contemplating an International Relations Honors major. The IR major requires an application and a minimum GPA of 3.65.

But I was also considering an internal transfer to Stern with around a 3.7 GPA. In Stern, I would probably major in Economics with a possible minor in East Asian Studies.

Do you guys think that, for someone looking to go into business as a career, Stern Economics majors would be just as suitable and desirable for i-banking positions as are Stern Finance majors? Also, what do you think about International Relations majors in terms of getting i-banking positions? Would firms like the fact that it’s not business and that it’s an Honors major where you have to maintain an A- GPA?

Oh yeah! also, as an internal transfer applying as an incoming Junior, would SAT scores be relevant at all? I didn’t do so hot…(low 2100s superscored and about a 1400 on cr/math)

Any help would be gladly appreciated!!

bumpitybumppppppppppppp

Just major in Ecom through CAS, pretty much the same thing.

They are related, I know, but Econ in Stern is in Stern after all, right?

you can’t major in Economics if you are in Stern. Economics is part of CAS. you can major in Finance if you are in Stern

Actually, Stern does have an economics major
