My cousin transferred out from Duke to Stern and like his experience so far. If you have your mind set on business, especially on financial industry, Stern's faculty and location are hard to beat.

thanks a ton for the feedback.

Is there someone who is a current student or graduate of Stern who would be willing to answer a few questions through email/PM/AIM? I would greatly appreciate it as I'm having trouble decide if NYU Stern is the right place for me!

I also have a few more questions, and like user PennHopeful89 I'd love to get the voice of current/graduate students.
PM me!

I'm a junior from California and have just started considering Stern as a possible business school to go to.
What would make Stern better than Haas at UC Berkeley?

stern and hass both has its own perks
if you want to work in cali, go to hass
if wall street is where you want to be, pick stern

in terms of cost nyu is a rip off but you do get to live in the city

stern also guarantees you a chance to study business while hass you have to apply

If I take a class at Stern during the summer, will I be able to transfer those credits to another school?

how is the marketing major at Stern? Do you take separate classes than Finance kids...??? what's male/female ratio in the marketing major?

Any news on the BPE program? (I know its just the first year...)

What kind of work will you be exposed to once you leave college?
Will your salary hover around the NYU mean, or be lower/higher?
Is the BPE a worthwhile major?

Just how competitive is Stern(once your in, lol)?

All my life I've been an overachiever. Right now, I'm taking the hardest course load available and I maintain a 3.7-3.8. But, like a said, I work hard and study hard. I got a 28 on my ACT; I know I'll need to get that up to get into any decent school. I'm working on, have a few practice books for SAT/ACT, goal is 32 ACT or 1400(CR+M) SAT, but I might end up with 30-31.

Ok, so real question, how hard will it be for me at Stern? I'll be with kids who are overachievers like me, except they will be naturally smarter, not having to take the SAT/ACT as many times as me to get a decent score. This kind of worries me, because my H.S. is pretty good, people recognize it. I'm in the top 10%, but I could easily be around 20-25% if other kids would study more and do their homework.

So, how much would I struggle?

I know college is more about hard work and time management(something I suck at), but Stern seems. not cut-throat, but pretty close to it. Or am I wrong on this judgment?

Thanks

as long as you are marginally smart then you should be fine and able to succeed. the material you learn is not overly complicated (its not like you'll be learning orgo or anything like that) it more depends on how much work you want to put into classes. while it is cut-throat, the people who do well at stern are the people who put the most effort into studying and into their projects. my SATs were in the low 1400s, which im pretty sure is the average for stern, but i took my course work pretty seriously and im in the top 5% now, so as you can see if you really want to succeed you'll be fine with hard work. the material is not the type that no matter how much you study you just wont be able to get it, like physics or something, but rather if you dont mind making the sacrifices you wont have a problem

to answer the question about marketing, yes the marketing kids do take difference classes than the finance kids. the marketing kids only need to take one intro to finance class. they also need to take all the other intro/core classes that all stern kids take. marketing major is the most popular after finance and accounting so there are plenty of kids doing it. most of them are girls, but there is still a number of guys, many of whom are gay.

lol so if you are straight and do marketing at Stern you have more of a chance with the girls...unless they think you're gay too?

I think I am pretty good with quant. analysis so if I go to stern I'd prob do Finance, but I also like marketing so does anyone know how hard it is (or if its possible) to do major/minor or dual major..etc?

almost everyone does a double major in stern because it is so easy...i mean a finance major is only 12 extra credits and i think marketing is 16 extra credits , so it would almost be a waste not to. and you cant minor in stern classes (if 12 credits is for a major, then a minor would have to be like 6 credits which is unreasonable so they just dont let you do it).

Could double major in something in LSA? I'm thinking about Political Science with Finance, but I don't know. Could I do it in 4 years?

i dont know what LSA stands for, but majoring is political science and finance will be difficult. majoring in any liberal arts major along with finance will be difficult for that matter. majoring in a business field (i.e. finance, accounting, etc.) is just 12 extra credits, whereas something like political science requires something like 40 credits to major in, so you can see why so several sternties would rather choose two stern majors rather than one stern major and one liberal arts major. if you also major in a liberal arts major, you end up using all your electives on that second major since it requires so many credits. so every semester you end up taking only major classes which can be tough. there are a few sternies who choose to do this, but the ones I know who do have pretty hectic school schedules. but its still possible to do in 4 years if you really want to.

it also depends on what your goal is. if your goal is to do ibanking or some other finance career, then the political science major will be useless and wont impress anyone. the sternies who do choose to major in a liberal arts majors usually choose something like mathematics which complements their finance major.
