One more quesiton: First year, do you need to bring a suit or anything? I'm probably going to bring khaki pants//dress shoes/dress shirt but would I ever need a full blown suit?

What exactly does "networking" involve, and how important is it?

I'd like to get an internship in film producing, or somewhere else in the entertainment business. what kinds of opportunities are there?

There's an internship fair on the 2nd day of Welcome Week...what do I need to do to prepare and who is hiring there, from your experience?

(sorry for the 3 questions in 1 post)

I am extremely interested in the BPE (Business and Political Economy) program starting this year at NYU. Have you heard about it and what are your thoughts on it? Also how was your financial aid experience, if you know what i mean?

Theres a lot of stuff on the board so I'll briefly touch on some things I think are helpful.

On Jobs: S&T is on par with IBD, and is just as difficult. You can't backdoor your way into the front office.
Interviews are difficult for both, and I found the Vault guides helpful, but mock interviews with seniors was even better.

Unless you plan on interviewing, suit is not required. I didn't have one freshman year. But to an internship fair you might want to bring a suit, or at least go business casual, and make sure you bring lots of copies of your resume.

Don't know much about BPE, but it sounds interesting, and HAS to be better that statistics is.

most students lean to IBD. S&T is not too popular with the people i know and talk to

so is it fair to say that the number of applications for IBD from Stern will far exceed the applications for S&T for any given BB?

How hard is it to get a 'on-campus federal work study' job? I mean, for example, what are my chances if I only pick three 'favorites'? Thanks,

quagmire: i would not go that far. there are other considerations you have to account for. for example, even if we assume that IBD gets more applications, IBD may also have more available positions. so even if the applicant pool for S&T is smaller, there could also be a smaller number of openings you are competing for. also, there may be plently of people who apply to both S&T and IBD, using one or the other as a backup. i agree with Getco that you cant backdoor your way in here and assume it will be easier. All front office positions will have ample competition. if it is a good position (regardless of what department it is in) at a good bank, more than enough sternies will apply to it.

on campus fed work study jobs are really easy to get. they usually just hire people who best fit their schedule. they are not looking for 3.5, but just generally smart and responsible people, and there are plenty of positions to go around so you shouldnt have a problem finding one.

Is 28 too low a ACT score to get into NYU?

Ummm, yes? Just kidding, I actually have no idea. I've only met one student at NYU who took the ACT.

Look at the ranges NYU gives, if its in the range, its not too low. Even if its below the range, I still feel strongly that you should apply. Good grades and some interesting outside activities should easily outweight a weak ACT score. Good luck!

Can international students at Stern get IB internships? If yes, is there a process they must undergo to get the ability to do so?

yes they can, most large banks will sponser them. however, there is a lot of paperwork that must be done way in advance, like 6 months or so from what i've heard. i dont know all the exact steps, but a counselor could tell you them. but defintely don't wait till the last minute, because i had a friend who started the registration process late and had to turn down a job offer from a BB because his paperwork was not processed.

1)Hi, what level of math is required to major in Finance. Is Calculus I enough?
2) what exactly are IBD and S&T?

For Finance Calc I is enough along with Stern Business statistics.

IBD = Investment Banking Division
S&T = Sales & Trading

I hope I dont sound to dumb saying this, but I am assuming most of the interviews ppl are talking about on here are for banks. What are the draw of banks? Are the paychecks big? Whats the average people make from one of this coveted positions. Also, it doesn't sound that many people are going for corporate jobs, like, working for Advertising at Starbucks or Walmart or something. Why is that? Again, I might be way off the mark here, so forgive me.
