Sticker shock! Cost of attendance from financial award letters.

soozviet, you make a good point about the extra classes like Theater Studies. Some BFA programs also have classes like Music Theory, Sight Reading, piano lessons, classes about the “business” side of acting, etc.

Oh, toowonderful, I stand corrected - the $22,000 I was looking at on the Muhlenberg site was per semester, NOT per year! So the tuition is really $44,000 per year, and your point stands!

Not sure where to “share” this, but if you’re thinking about cost of theater eduction, you might want to check out this Washington Post article about lifetime earnings based on chosen degree. Drama/Theater Arts gets mentioned in first paragraph. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/storyline/wp/2014/09/29/want-proof-college-is-worth-it-look-at-this-list-of-the-highest-paying-majors/

Unsurprising, when you consider that even those lucky enough to have a production contract at $1800 for 52 weeks every year won’t earn over $95k/year, while usually needing to live in the nation’s most expensive cities.

Lucky none of our kids are in it for the money.

“What I did for love”. And because there is NO other option.

But honestly, if I read the graph correctly, there is only about a $250K difference between a liberal arts major and a theatre major. AND, there is no separate breakdown for an MT major. Which I would love to see. Not that it is going to be big money. And in today’s economy, no one is getting a job anyway. These figures apparently measure the “lifetime” earning of people who graduated 30 years ago, THEIR life earnings. How is that even relevant to today’s graduate. But I tire of these money charts regarding college majors. If you want to make money right out of school, go to a trade school and become a cosmetologist, or a welder, or a plumber or if you also want to go to college, an engineer or health professional. If you want to be enriched for a lifetime, study what you love without regard to the $ you will earn afterward. $ is not what “college” ever was, or is supposed to be about. Why we have made it so I don’t know.

Because we each need to pay for college for the next generation and most are not independently wealthy.

^ We need to stop the insanity of the increasing cost of college – not earn more to pay more for it. (Cause the reality is even upper class families are taking out loans to pay for college tuition). I saw a special on CNN last night: College Administration costs have increased in the past 10 years something like 300%! Its craziness. When I went to school I worked part-time during college and worked full time in the summer and received grants (and I was neither poor, brilliant, or a minority)and that was sufficient to graduate in 4 years owing $0. Precious few can accomplish this today.

Can anyone give more info about FSU giving BFA/MT students the 50% OOS tuition waiver? Is that listed anywhere on their website? I’m not seeing it, but if that is true, it makes this school a much more viable option for us, as we are not in FL.

A funny thing: my daughter’s high school did “In The Heights” yesterday, a show I had heard of, but hadn’t seen before. You all probably know it, but a main plot point is that the character Nina went to Stanford on a scholarship, but it didn’t cover all her costs, so she was working two jobs while in school and didn’t have time to study, so her grades suffered and she lost the scholarship and had to drop out.

It was a great production, but I had to laugh at myself, because after all the discussions here about college costs, all I could think watching it was: “Nina, why on EARTH did you go to Stanford??? You live in New York City - you could have gotten into the Macauley Honors Program at CUNY (City University of New York) and gotten FREE tuition! Or if you really wanted a prestigious “name” school, why not Columbia? It’s expensive, but it’s local and an easy commute from Washington Heights, so at least you would have saved a lot in housing and airfare!” I just had to laugh at myself, because all these discussions of college costs and financial planning have totally seeped into my brain!

mspamela: I can address your question about the partial out-of-state waiver for the BFA Theatre students at FSU. We have and do give a scholarship that is 50% of the out-of-state portion of the tuition (meaning it is 50% of the difference between in-state and OOS.) It is awarded to all BFA students who are admitted to Acting or MT and once awarded, it is guaranteed for four years. It is not on the web site because we are not guaranteed the funding every year automatically from Admissions and I don’t want to set up false expectations. I have to ask for it every year when I work with the Admissions office for the students we have selected for the BFA programs. That said; I expect the scholarship to continue to be available to us this year and going forward. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

Michele Diamonti

I really believe the best thing you can do for your kid is try to encourage them to attend the school that meets their needs the best without requiring crippling loans. Compromise might be needed but I think the freedom on the other side after graduation is more than worth it.

@All4FSU Now Michele, If we could just get you come north for auditions, like to Unifieds, you’d be on Everyone’s List! You sure we can’t skype our audition?? Tell ya what, I’ll give FSU a free classroom to use in Pittsburgh and I’ll even fly you up for the day. Its nice and warm here in February. How about it? lol.

@All4FSU thank you for the information–it helps a lot! I will take a closer look at FSU now. Really appreciate the offer to call and chat. :)

OK but now I’m gonna remove MSU OOS because as of Fall 2015 all BFA’s get in-state tuition.
