Sticker shock! Cost of attendance from financial award letters.

I know it has been said before but want to repeat that these costs are NOT what students with demonstrated financial need will be expected to pay - they are the published full list prices. In reality, this list will look VERY different for those with financial need.

^^^Right, @MomCares. Sometimes a more expensive school with a higher list price can come in as cheaper than a school with a lower list price once FA packages are procured. This was true for my kids, in fact.

@soozievt, is exactly right about that.
And just as another note, we found out from an audio podcast with Tracey Moore, that Hartt gives academic merit OR talent merit. But no students gets both.

It is very important that parents find out which schools allow one to stack scholarships and which do not as this can make a huge difference financially. Perhaps I will start a new thread with this topic? Or perhaps we can just add that information to this thread? What do you guys think?

@addicted2MT…that sounds like it would be a good topic for its own thread so that people could find that specific discussion more readily. Go for it!

Great idea @addicted2MT. Being able to stack scholarships made a big difference in our decision. Another thing to consider is tuition increases. Some schools guarantee tuition rates for 4 years. Others may subject you to annual tuition rate increases. That can make a substantial difference over 4 years when you estimate your costs.

I’m not positive on this, but I believe U of Arts stacks, Coastal Carolina does not stack. And, though again I am not positive on this, it looks like Montclair may stack in addition to their instate tuition for BFA students.

PPU COPA— scholarships stackable and renewable all four years with a 3.0 gpa. Outside scholarships do not adversely effect FA package. Tuition and fees NOT guarenteed.

A Financial Aid thread seems like a very good idea.

Yes, UArts allows stacking - at least they did last year. My D is a freshman BFA Acting student there.

I have been very pleasantly surprised by the rate of tuition increases at CCPA, about $500 a year more in each of the last two years, which is way less than I plugged into my will-i-have-enough-money-for-this? spreadsheet.

Otterbein has frozen tuition for this year and next.

^Yes, hallelujah!

I am very confused by “stacking” scholarships. Just got an unexpected extra talent award today in the mail on top of what has been offered academically and as an “out of state” bonus. I guess I’ll be getting on the phone with admissions to figure out what the real deal is at the school.

@limbo2019‌, stacking means that you can have more than one type of scholarship. At some schools, for example, an academic merit award would make you in eligible for an artistic talent award (or vice versa)–you can receive one or the other, but not both. You could only receive funding from one source, basically. On the other hand, at schools that allow stacked awards, you could conceivably get an academic merit award, a talent scholarship, and a needs-based grant, and you could accept them all. So your awards can add up.

Hope I explained that clearly rather than muddying the waters…!

@limbo2019, those bonus scholarships are always exciting!!!

Ahhhhh I typed my post #334 on my phone last night and didn’t see that Our Friend Mr. Autocorrect turned “ineligible” into two words. The second sentence should have the word INELIGIBLE in it, not “in eligible.” Sorry!
