Still confused about loans

I am still somewhat confused even after reading the FAQs and searching this forum and researching on my own.
Our EFC was 1760 and S got an award of the combination to equal 5500 in loans. I get all that. We will still need to come up with the gap of about 5000 more. I hear all the time about students having 30, 000 or more. How do you get additional loans? Does the school help you find these loans? There is no way my husband and I would qualify for a Plus loan. I read somewhere that in this case, S would be eligible for 9000 more or is it 9000 total??? And how and when would we/should we find out how to apply for this? Thanks for any help.

It would be $4000 more if you are denied Plus.

For the additional money you could do a parent plus loan. The application is pretty easy and done online. Many people assume they won’t qualify but they do. If you are denied for the plus loan your son would get an additional $4,000. ($5500 + $4000 = $9500 total).
