Hey CC, I'm up late, pulling my hair out about the May 1st deadline. I'm trying to choose between the BME program at Johns Hopkins (which would leave me with 90K in loans), or Schreyers Honors College (which would leave me with no debt). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

90 k is not worth it, you still have grad school. Schreyer is extremely well respected!!!

Penn State is respected enough, and the honors college even more so. 90k is a lot in debt, my opinion would be to do Penn State

Schreyers Honors College without a doubt. Not trying to be insulting but 18 year olds have no concept of just how difficult it would be to pay off that much debt. It will put a crimp on your lifestyle when you graduate and effect many of your future decisions on housing, marriage and other opportunities. My son graduated from Schreyers and has a great job and no debt. By the way, he turned down an Ivy to attend because of the cost.

Ask yourself what Hopkins is really offering you for 90k that you isn’t there at PSU. Think about how many recruiters will be on the Penn State campus recruiting all sorts of majors -engineering, business and others. If you are after a good job or want a more complete college experience, PSU will certainly provide more value. Prestige? Try to quantify that. 90k + years of interest is a lot of money for your parents to be on the hook for. Banks will only lend you about 22k max. I admit I don’t know a whole lot about JHU, and I put a lot of weight on corporate presence and the big college experience. Ask yourself the hard questions and quantify the value of JHU vs. PSU. Prestige has to be converted into a better chance to land a job or a much higher starting salary in order to have a value.
