Still on the fence...

I was admitted into William & Mary with a full scholarship and waitlisted at UVA. UVA recently offered me a spot. Now, I absolutely have no idea where to go!

I can do a lot of things at William & Mary. I already have 2 awards on my resume (if I attend there) and plan to apply to a scholar program. But, I am not as hard-working as the other students. Although I like to be challenged, I don't want to study all the times. I've heard that the town is quite boring and that the students don't have school spirit. They would go to a football game for a few minutes and then go back to study. I don't want to study on Saturday nights, unless I have to. Also, William & Mary is new to services for the deaf, and I don't want to be a guinea pig to the services. It doesn't have any interpreters on the staff, so I am concerned that I would be given an unskilled interpreter or notetaker and that I would miss a lot of valuable information.

I think I'll be happier at UVA because it has laid-back atmosphere and is sport-oriented. A lot of my friends will go there, and I would be only 15 min away from my family. UVA also provides good services for the deaf and is already experienced with working with deaf students. It has a solid psychology department and offers many research opportunities. But, UVA didn't offer me any scholarships while it provided some of my friends full scholarships or Echol Scholars program.

What do you think?

It sounds like UVA, especially because of the deaf student aspect. That is, unless ou truly need the extra financial help then go to WM since you have no choice.

Sounds like UVA is your choice. From what you describe, it's better fit and has better support services. But make sure you check on the housing and course selection situation at UVA. Sometimes waitlisted students are stuck with "what's left".
Congratulations on getting off the waitlist...quite an accomplishment. My son was also waitlisted (OOS) and has very little hope that he will get in.

We have ties to both schools. ALthough the studying aspect at W & M cannot be ignored it's not as you describe. I'm assuming you are a Virginia resident so the although the money at W & M is appealing, instate at UVA is still quite envious to the rest of the world! In your situation it really cannot be about "the money" you need to attend the school that first meets your educational needs and it sounds as if UVA is the place.

I'm thinking of going to W&M, and if I don't like it there, I will try to transfer to UVA. How hard is it to transfer to UVA as a sophomore?

Don't overlook that W&M is less than half the size of UVA, which can create a more intimate community feel. Aside from that, though, the school spirit and rep of UVA would be stronger.
