Stocking Stuffers 2022 - since we’re already talking holiday gifts

I always lay filled stockings down. They get pretty bulky and heavy.

Thinking of getting these scrunchies. You can put a key or money in them. I am thinking that they may be practical for my city daughter. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08BNVQ4BT/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1BXA7SY610QP5&psc=1

In case anybody bought these advent calendars - “Lidl US is recalling advent calendars because the cream-filled chocolate inside may contain salmonella, a bacteria that sickens tens of thousands of Americans each year.”

More information about the recall:

The advent calendars have been a hit with D1 (Nespresso) her fiance (Lego) and D2 (Sephora). We have been getting pictures in our family group text from all of them showing their goodies!

Now that’s a gift that keeps on giving

Someone I follow on Instagram posted a pic of the advent calendars she bought her children - by day 2 all 24 treat doors open - they had eaten them all! - what a disaster that could be if it was one of these tainted ones!

So a change in plans here. As my kids have grown and gotten significant others and now we have three grandchildren, this year I was filling 10 stockings. I am not going to lie, kind of overwhelming. But then we decided to make holiday plans on the 23rd rather than the 25th, so we could all be together and then they can then spend time with their other families. Since the oldest grandchild thinks Santa comes Christmas Eve while the children are sleeping we were stressing on how to open the stockings here at our house. Then it dawned on me, hey maybe I am done filling stockings! Since I already bought this years stuff (including Bombas, Mikes Hot Honey, See’s Candy, ornaments etc…), I will put this year’s in a box to open. Then next year maybe I will just get them an ornament each.

We give our kids money for Christmas so we do stockings for them. I did not do a stocking for granddaughter. I will let D and SIL take care of that. We bought her a lot of gifts though (and I’m sure I will add a few more).

I have no grandkids yet, but I like this idea. I may actually stop doing stockings all together sometime soon, but certainly don’t want an entire next generation’s to worry about.

My mother still hangs our childhood stockings for my brother, sister and me. She fills them with practical things for us. She has never done them for her grandchildren b/c the grandchildren all have stockings in our own homes. Kind of silly she continues this 50+ years later but I must admit, I still love getting all the little stuff every year. My mom even sends my sister’s stocking to her every year since she lives in another state and does not come for Christmas. My mom gets it back the next time they see each other.

I plan to continue the same tradition for my kids. My oldest is not coming home this year so I sent her a stocking full of practical items for her and her fiancé. FWIW, H and I have never put up stockings for ourselves in our own home, b/c “Santa” only brought things for our kids not us so it’s fun still getting one from my parents.

I put mostly practical things in our kids stockings also. Husband and I don’t do them for each other either. OK, based on your feedback maybe I need to keep doing them for the kids.

I’m trying hard to not get much for the stockings, when they were younger I got them a lot of candies. This year one satsuma each from our garden, some See’s Candy, one gift card from Target, maybe a lottery ticket.

I only plan to fill stockings for people who are in my house on Xmas morning or if we decide to hold Xmas morning a different day. Is this not the norm?

My stocking is the one I’ve had since birth. 50 years old now. H’s is newer, but the same one we got when we got married. The kids each have two (a normal one and a giant one my sister made for all the cousins/her kids), but they’ve had them since birth as well. At some point when they have houses of their own, they’ll get them and that’ll be the end of stockings for us I guess. For me, a stocking is for life!

I actually enjoy doing the little things for the stockings. I haven’t thought about stopping.

Both H and D will have full stockings to open xmas morning. If D’s bf is with us at some point, he’ll get a stocking too. I could see feeling differently if there are ever grandchildren in the picture.

I know people have different views of stockings. One family I know JUST does stockings for all of the adults. They do a name draw, and you fill the stocking of the person you draw. They all live within the same state so it works well. I think in this case the parents participate and don’t buy other gifts, but of course other families may implement differently.

I enjoy doing stockings. I do them for my husband, my two daughters, their husband, my grandson and our dogs. We go to my in-laws for Christmas and there, every aunt buys two small things for all the great grand children’s stockings.

But is it a generic stocking that changes each year then? Or everyone fills the person’s own stocking that stays with them forever.

If GFs, spouses or grandkids come here, we would get more for them.

But I recall if we went to our grandparents’ house for Xmas we brought our stockings with us and they got filled there.

I guess the main question is - is a stocking for life or something that regularly gets replaced?

My late mother in law knitted all our stockings. Husband, me, both kids. They remain very special . We are going to my sister’s house out of state for Christmas and the stockings will travel with us. My sister (who was close to my mother and father in law) reminded me to bring them!

Ours were all hand cross stitched by a family member. They were gifted to us when we had our first xmas together and then they gifted matching ones to our babies (I even have one for our son that passed). That family member has sadly passed so I’ll have to figure out how to add a stocking when the family hopefully expands some day.
