my D filed her tax return and found out that someone did it already in order to get a refund! A tax return with the same ssn, name, address, has already been submitted! it's unbelievable! but what i want to know is how it can affect her fafsa? she needs her scholarships to pursuit her studies... help.. please!

The IRS now has a toll-free number to assist identity theft victims. The new IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit will mark affected accounts so that identity theft issues may be resolved more quickly. Victims can call 1-800-908-4490 and speak with a customer service rep Monday – Friday, from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Does she have a family member who might have done this?

Where was the tax return check sent to? And how was it cashed?

A friend of mine’s ex-H did this to one of her kids. Ugh!

Yes mom2, it is unfortunate that much identify theft involves relatives and then co-workers. But she still needs to get moving to fix it.

thanks for your help! in fact she was doing the taxe return with my H at home, and they e-filed it with turbo taxe and 2 days later it got rejected by IRS “error code 0515” meanning that someone has already e-filed the same ssn, name and address a few days before my D. W e are very in shock! we have already notified IRS,the 3 bureaus, and done a police report but i am worried for the future… is she going to have problems with the fafsa to get her scholarships? and later on is she going to have trouble finding a job with the government? she is already in intern at the EPA IN DC and majoring in international relations…i’m worried…

I would think that they can track down who got sent her check and how it was cashed.
