So the IRS was hacked, and now my brother has been denied a scholarship because our tax return was not processed due to the belief that “we are not who we say we are” (however we are the victims of some nasty hackers). Now, after having thought we fixed the issue the first time around and hearing this upsetting news, I am worried that the months I have spent applying for many scholarships will be all for nothing.
With the IRS it may take months for another “temporary fix”. I don’t want this to haunt me my entire life. I have put the most effort into my college applications than anything before, and I NEED financial aid to pay for college. I am so unbelievably frustrated. My life is in the hands of a criminal.
Hey Math. You will be fine. All you need to do is give a copy of the tax return to the FINAid office and all will be well. You sign a tax return under penalties of perjury so it is presumed to be correct. They are not there to audit the return; just to use it to verify your income. Good luck. These mishaps happen. I am sure they are set up to handle this stuff.
First, from an IRS perspective what has been resolved? What’s been done to qualify your legit tax returns for processing? Afaik, this occurred in '15. The hacked feature was turned back on this past summer.
Can’t assume only a paper copy will do. Colleges can require the IRS “transcript” verification. You would need to speak with the colleges or scholarship organizations, see what alternatives they will accept.
Agree. You need to talk to the colleges. Some will NOT accept just your signed copy. They want a tax transcript.
Call the college financial aid offices.
And don’t wait to call. Get your ducks lined up and get on the phone. Be proactive.
Good point about this being for a 2015 tax year. It should have been ironed out by now and they would have processed your actual return and kicked out the false one.
